Future scientists, engineers and doctors will be honored by the University of Missouri–St. Louis’ College of Arts and Sciences during a dinner on Feb, 21.

Thirty-seven St. Louis-area high school juniors will receive a Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Science during the 2nd annual recognition dinner at 6:30 p.m. in rooms A, B and C in the Millennium Student Center on UMSL’s north campus. The students were chosen for the honor by their respective high schools. They had to have good grades and demonstrate outstanding capabilities in the sciences.

Students, their parents and teachers will be treated to dinner, a piano performance by UMSL Chancellor and jazz aficionado Tom George. They’ll also hear from various speakers. The keynote speaker is Patricia Parker, Des Lee Professor of Zoological Studies and chair of the Department of Biology at UMSL. The title of her speech is “Managing Diseases in the World’s Wild Places.” She has led a team of evolutionary biologists, veterinarians and parasitologists from five countries to monitor the arrival of new diseases threatening the endemic birds of the Galapagos Island.

St. Charles County Executor, Steven Ehlmann, will present a proclamation to the students along with congratulatory remarks. The event is by invitation only.
