Benjamin Taylor was shocked when he was notified that he’d been selected by the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants as the Lead and Enhance the Accounting Profession Student of the Month for June 2012. He was even more surprised when he learned a month later he’d been chosen as the 2011-12 LEAP Student of the Year.
Intellectual property lawyer to discuss copyright, other issues
During the 2008 presidential election, a poster image of Barack Obama by artist Shepard Fairey gained iconic status. The problem? The St. Louis Public Radio | 90.7 KWMU and Quincy Public Radio | 90.3 WQUB Fall Membership Campaign concluded Friday evening raising $478,000 from 3,900 pledges. Of the total pledges, 1,400 were from first-time contributors. The campaign, which began on October 11, is one of two annual, on-air membership campaigns held by the station.

The Division of Continuing Education at the University of Missouri–St. Louis has a new name: School of Professional & Continuing Studies. “It was determined that the ‘School of Professional & Continuing Studies’ would more accurately reflect the nature of our work, the constituents with whom we work, and better align us with our peers and our related professional organizations,” said Wm. Thomas Walker, dean of PCS.
Variety Children’s Theatre to perform ‘Annie’ at Touhill
St. Louis-area fans of “Annie” do not have to fly to New York City and fight the clogged Manhattan streets to see the beloved musical. Students to stage Pulitzer winner’s ‘In the Blood’
A new production at the University of Missouri–St. Louis will take a raw, unfiltered look into the world of poverty in the United States. “In the Blood,” by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, follows the story of Hester as she struggles to provide for her five fatherless children. Students with UMSL’s Department of Theatre, Dance and Media Studies will perform the play. Jacqueline Thompson, visiting assistant professor of theater at UMSL, will direct the production, which is described as a modern-day reinterpretation of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter.”

Bjorn Ranheim, cellist for the St. Louis Symphony, plays movements from Bach’s 3rd Unaccompanied Cello Suite on Oct. 8 in the Millennium Student Center at UMSL. Ranheim performed at the annual awards ceremony and banquet for Students and Teachers as Research Scientists.

‘House’ director looks to adapt UMSL scholar’s novel for film
Los Angeles-based director and writer Julian Higgins has emerged as a young talent within the film industry. He’s received wide acclaim for his short film “Thief” and his turn directing an episode of the popular television show “House” in its final season. He’s next looking to make his feature-film directorial debut with a possible adaptation of the novel “The Inverted Forest” by John Dalton, director of the MFA in Creative Writing Program at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.
Civil War symphony to be staged at Missouri History Museum, Touhill
Missouri was the site of more than 1,000 battles during the Civil War, trailing only Virginia and Tennessee. That staggering fact often surprises many people not familiar with the state’s pivotal role in the conflict. The 150th anniversary of Missouri’s involvement in the Civil War was the inspiration for a new composition by Barbara Harbach, professor of music at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

St. Louis Philharmonic to open season at UMSL
The St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra will open its 2012-13 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. The orchestra will accompany Greek tenor and Sony Classical recording artist Mario Frangoulis, who will make his first St. Louis appearance by arrangement with the Horatio Alger Association. Special guests will include soprano Deborah Myers and tenor George Perris.
Golf tournament raises funds for Athletics
University of Missouri–St. Louis alumnus David Archibald (BSBA 2005), Matt Hellebusch and Kelsey Cline won the third annual UMSL Tritons Golf Tournament. But the biggest winner was the Department of Athletics at UMSL. Proceeds from the event went toward the department’s 11 sports programs.

UMSL director joins academic journal’s editorial board
Malaika Horne, curator emeritus of the University of Missouri System and founding director of the Executive Leadership Consortium at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, has been appointed to the 2013 editorial board for the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education. The appointment is a three-year term.
Grammy-winning eighth blackbird to perform Touhill show
Chicago-based sextet eighth blackbird will migrate south for a performance of classical fusion that incorporates art, philosophy and theater at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. The ensemble’s concert, “shifted in flight,” will begin at 8 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center.
