Celtic Festival featuring Black 47 presented by CIS

Description: Black 47 has taken its Celtic-rock roots and blended the sound with distinctive musical styles of its native New York – a little reggae, hip-hop, folk, blues, Irish traditional, jazz and blues. The band is celebrating an astonishing 20 years of rocking the world with the Celtic-influenced genre it pioneered, not to mention their championing of various political and social issues. Known for its partying as much as its politics, Black 47 has released 13 albums on major and indie labels, toured the world and blown the genre of Celtic rock wide open for many a band to follow. The concert is sponsored by The Smurfit-Stone Corporation Endowed Professorship in Irish Studies, International Studies and Programs, University of Missouri–St. Louis, and Llywelyn’s Pubs, with the support of the Regional Arts Commission, St. Louis. Psi Chi Lecture

Description: “Trends in Work Ethic Research.” John Meriac, PhD, is an assistant professor of psychology at UMSL affiliated with the graduate program in industrial/organizational psychology. Work ethic has become a popular topic of discussion in various contexts, including business, sports, education and other applications. Empirical research on the subject has also increased in recent years, providing new insights into the importance of the variable. Ferguson Lunch Trolley

Description: The acclaimed UMSL Jazz Ensemble turns up the volume with a very special guest artist, St. Louis-based vocalist Denise Thimes. How Do We Know We Are Doing Good Work?

Rake-A-Thon Service Day

Description: Who doesn’t love to jump in leaves AND serve others? This has been our service project tradition in November for the past few years! We supply the people, rakes, and lawn bags, to rake the lawns of St. Ann parishioners who need assistance. We will meet at the CNC at 9 a.m., breakfast and lunch are provided, as well as transportation to the raking sites (though we may have to carpool). Just bring yourself, dress warmly, and be ready to have some fun! You’re welcome to come for just half the day if that fits better with your schedule! ‘Pilobolus’ presented by Dance St. Louis

Description: “Pilobolus” is the closest thing contemporary dance has to a household name. The avant-garde dance troupe was founded in 1971, and has evolved into a full-fledged entertainment company that has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and the Academy Awards. This presentation is sponsored by St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Ameren is Dance St. Louis’ presenting sponsor for the 2012-13 season.
