For weeks now, pro-democracy protesters have clashed with police in the streets of Hong Kong. At issue is Beijing’s control in candidate selection for Hong Kong’s leader.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist Ian Johnson will give a talk about the political demonstrations in China Oct 30 at UMSL.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist Ian Johnson, who is based in Beijing, will discuss “Revolution from below?” about the political demonstrations in China from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Oct 30 in 331 of the Social Sciences & Business Building at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

Johnson first went to China in 1984 and has lived there off and on for 15 years as a student, journalist and teacher, focusing on grassroots political and religious organizations.

He has written two books, won a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 2001 for his coverage of China, and writes regularly for the New York Times, New York Review of Books and other publications.

The event is free and open to the public.

It is sponsored by the Office of International Studies and Programs at UMSL in cooperation with The Pulitzer Center.
