Jordan Fletcher scored 27 points and ripped down 20 rebounds while leading the UMSL women’s basketball team to a 67-58 victory over Truman State, capping a 2-0 weekend for the Tritons.
Women’s Basketball
UMSL went 2-0 last weekend at home, defeating Quincy 57-47 on Thursday and Truman State 67-58 on Saturday. Against the Hawks, sophomore Laura Szorenyi scored a game-high 20 points, and defensively, the Tritons limited their sixth opponent to fewer than 55 points this season. In the win over the Bulldogs, UMSL rallied from a 15-point first-quarter deficit in large part because of the work of junior Jordan Fletcher, who had 27 points and 20 rebounds. The latter number was the third most in a single game in program history and is a Great Lakes Valley Conference single-game high this season. UMSL (9-8, 4-5 GLVC) will play its next four games on the road, beginning this weekend at Rockhurst and William Jewell on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
Men’s Basketball
UMSL knocked off co-GLVC West Division leader Quincy 70-69 on Thursday night when Joseph English sank a pair of free throws – the last one decisive – with 1.2 seconds to play. The Tritons trailed by 14 early in the second half before rallying for the win. Senior Hunter Reine scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half, while junior Drew Skaggs finished with a season-high 14. UMSL also nearly knocked off new West Division leader Truman State on Saturday. The Tritons forced overtime before coming up short in the 86-82 loss. Junior Elijah Watson scored eight of his 18 points in the final 1:14 to help UMSL rally from a seven-point deficit. Junior Steven Davis knocked down eight 3-pointers for a game-high 24 points. Those eight 3-pointers equaled his season high and were one short of the single-game school record. The Tritons (9-10, 3-6 GLVC) will play their next four games on the road, beginning this weekend at Rockhurst and William Jewell on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
