Tough Tritons defense

UMSL’s defense, anchored by senior center Jordan Fletcher (far right), made life difficult for Indianapolis and Missouri S&T last week as the Tritons ran their winning streak to nine and clinched the GLVC Central Division title.

Women’s Basketball
UMSL clinched the Great Lakes Valley Conference Central Division title with a pair of victories last week that ran its winning streak to nine games. The Tritons first knocked off Indianapolis 79-63 on Thursday before routing Missouri S&T 76-53 on Saturday, improving to 10-0 this season inside the Mark Twain Building. Senior center Jordan Fletcher averaged 28 points and shot 23 for 29 (79.3 percent) from the field in the two games. Senior forward Shawnta Johnson had a tripled-double with 13 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in Saturday’s victory. UMSL (16-5, 10-4 GLVC) travels across the river to McKendree on Thursday before returning home Saturday to play host to Illinois Springfield on Senior Day.

Men’s Basketball
The Tritons bounced back from a 77-70 overtime loss to Indianapolis on Thursday to record an 82-65 win over Missouri S&T on Saturday. Senior Steven Davis averaged 22.5 points while making a combined 11 of 24 3-pointers in the two games. Senior Elijah Watson added 9.5 points and 11 assists per game. UMSL (12-11, 7-7 GLVC) travels across the river to McKendree on Saturday before returning home on Saturday to face Illinois Springfield on Senior Day.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming
The women’s swimming team recorded a program-best seventh-place finish at last week’s 2018 GLVC Championships. The women scored 227 points while the men finished eighth with 195 points. The women set eight school records and recorded five NCAA B-cuts. Sophomore Merel Visser led the way with a pair of runner-up finishes in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle races. The men recorded three B-cuts and set one school record while recording fifth-place finishes in the 200- and 400-yard medley relays. Senior Nico Ruiz finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Softball
The Tritons went 2-2 to open their season at the Charger Chillout in Huntsville, Alabama. UMSL recorded wins over Delta State (3-2) on Thursday and Trevecca Nazarene (13-5) on Friday. Senior Jennah Perryman tallied six hits, including two doubles, and recorded four RBIs. Junior Reagan Osborn also had six hits and drew three walks. The Tritons travel to Bentonville, Arkansas, this weekend for six games in the 9-State Classic.
