Thanksgiving, a time for reflection and gratitude

Thanksgiving is always a time to reflect on and express our gratitude.  Even as we find ourselves still battling a global pandemic in which so many of us have lost so much, we are reminded of all that is precious and that nothing can be taken for granted anymore.

We are also still grieving and striving to overcome all the racial injustices that continue to plague this country, but now with renewed attention, energy, and hope.  In this spirit, we should not forget that our cherished Thanksgiving tradition is also a story of trauma, loss, and resilience for Native Americans, Indigenous, and First Nations people.

We can honor their stories and expand our understanding of the meanings of Thanksgiving by learning more!  A Racial Justice Guide to Thanksgiving is a curated set of informational and pedagogical resources provided by Center for Racial Justice in Education in order to highlight and uplift the perspectives and contributions of Native American communities.

We at ODEI wish you a safe, reflective, and festive holiday and break!

Winding Down Women’s History Month, Winding Up for Action!

As we come to the end of the month, we wanted to thank you all for your support of the diverse programming that led to a wonderfully successful Women’s History Month. A special thank you to the Office of Student Involvement for the coordination of the events this month.

Throughout the month, programs focused on hearing women’s voices, allowing opportunities for storytelling, mentoring, sharing, and concluded with celebrating the Trailblazers and our UMSL staff. Despite shifting to a virtual format this year, we were elated with the attendance and participation from campus partners across the institution and from the greater community as well.  Click here if you missed the ceremony or want to watch it again!

As we continue to focus on women’s accomplishments, goals, and the obstacles we still face, we acknowledge that one month is not enough to capture the full richness of women’s lives. As such, we encourage you to explore and this resource guide, 10 Ways to Advance Women & Gender Equality (click to download PDF)

This concise guide provides helpful links and offers advice for everyone across the gender spectrum on how to better support women, achieve equity, and fair treatment. We hope you will find it useful and encourage you to share with your networks as well. Additionally, please reach out to the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Gender Studies program to get involved with next year’s Women’s History Month programming and women-focused programming throughout the year.

Thank you again for celebrating women throughout the month of March and in your everyday work and lives.

Inclusive Teaching Tips

While online teaching and learning can be challenging for faculty and students alike, research has shown that students from underrepresented groups often face additional challenges. By implementing inclusive teaching practices, faculty can create classroom and online learning environments where ALL student feel like they belong and can learn at high levels.  To this end, UMSL’s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Center for Teaching and Learning have teamed up to provide you with some inclusive teaching practices and resources.  Your continued efforts and thoughtfulness towards helping transform our students’ lives are so very appreciated by all! Thank you!

Celebrate 50 years of LGBTQ+ Pride!

This year marks the 50th anniversary of LGBTQ Pride, first started to honor the Stonewall Uprising that served as the tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Read more about the history of Pride Month.

Although Pride Month is usually marked with festive parades and celebrations worldwide, this year organizers rise to the challenge of our times by planning several virtual events.

This year provides additional cause for celebration with the recent Supreme Court ruling banning LGBTQ discrimination in the workplace. Although this decision is historic, it’s hard to believe that it has been such a long fight for equality in the workplace for our LGBTQ communities.

And as we celebrate this victory, we must remember that Black Lives Matter protests are not just about the police killing Black men, but also about the violence committed  on Black women and members of the LGBTQ community…whose stories of violence by the police we usually don’t see on the news.  The energy and support of the current protests are also serving to bolster support for Black Trans Lives Matter protests as well.

So we take a pause to celebrate some good news, while keeping our voices raised for justice and racial equality!
