Thanks to the generous support of the National Science Foundation for UMSL ADVANCE, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is pleased to announce Equity Advisor Training in Summer 2022.  To help UMSL achieve our Inclusive Excellence and ADVANCE initiatives and goals, Equity Advisors serve as a resource to support faculty and staff committee work by providing guidance for best practices in the recruitment, retention, and promotion of high-quality faculty and staff.  Equity advisors provide an equity-lens regarding gender, race, ethnicity, and other dimensions of identity so that search, promotion, and other academic processes are equitable and inclusive across all departments/units, including those in STEM.

Women Trailblazer Award Ceremony

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion presents the 27th annual Women Trailblazer’s Award Ceremony honoring UMSL women—faculty, staff, students, and alumnae who continue to “blaze trails” at UMSL and in the greater community that we serve. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at 2:00pm in the MSC Century Rooms.

Sarah Fenske, “St. Louis On The Air” Host/Producer (STLPR) will serve as the Mistress of Ceremony and Coach Shaquan, Certified Relationship Coach & Leadership Expert (PRT Coaching Services) will serve as this year’s guest speaker.

Learn how to support student veterans!

Join colleagues from across campus for Green Zone training! 

March 22, 2022 from 10:00-11:30 am in ABH 103

This interactive program will educate staff and faculty on military and veteran culture;  provide information on how to support student veterans; and highlight what our student veterans bring to the UMSL community.  Participants in this session will learn :

    • basic military terminology, structure, and a brief overview military culture as well as the unique subcultures of each branch of service.
    • the strengths/benefits that student veterans bring to campus and the challenges that they face.
    • ways to support student veterans at UMSL ranging from interactions inside/outside the classroom to struggles with VA benefits.
    • about the Veterans Center and what is offers students, staff, and faculty as well as what makes us stand out in our STL community.

ODEI CommUNITY Series (March event)

Join us for the first Spring 2022 ODEI CommUNITY Series Event!

These events are opportunities to build community while we build skills and foster understanding.  Stay tuned for upcoming events!

Our kick-off event is a facilitated workshop on Radical Listening.  Radical Listening is an approach to engagement and dialogue that focuses on bearing witness to people’s stories. Participants will learn skills to actively focus, practice pausing and confirm with others the accuracy of our understanding of their stories and experiences. Open to all members of the UMSL community!

This workshop will be led by special guest facilitator, Tabari Coleman. Tabari is a training consultant and social justice advocate known for his thoughtful but direct approach in facilitating dialogue sessions that focus on effective communication and building empathy. With more than 18 years-experience in diversity and inclusion training and social justice work, he brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and expertise to his work.

UMSL ADVANCE launches website to support women in STEM

A new website launching today – appropriately on International Day of Women and Girls in Science – will serve to highlight that continuing work. The site – umsl.edu/advance – outlines the project’s three overlapping and complementary action areas, provides a list of resources for women faculty members and features space to spotlight some of their work, including links to stories that appear in UMSL Daily.

How Racial Inequality Impacts our communities concerning Crime and Justice

In partnership with the University of Missouri in St. Louis (UMSL) Criminal Justice Department, Gateway Human Trafficking is pleased to announce that Dr. Rostami’s Race, Crime, and Justice Course live guest speaker sessions are now open to the public.

These sessions are offered online via Zoom. During these weekly live sessions, we will discuss various issues concerning Race, Crime, and Justice in our communities that makes people of color more vulnerable to crimes and obstacles they are experiencing to get justice.

UPCOMING EVENT: Big Trends Reshaping the Nation’s Latino Population

Join us with Dr. Mark Hugo López, Director of the Pew Research Center’s Race and Ethnicity Research, who will discuss major trends reshaping the nation’s Hispanic/Latino population. Highlighted will be the diversity of the Hispanic/Latino population along with some of the Pew Research Center’s latest findings based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

This virtual event also serves as the keynote for the launch of a new Hispanic/Latino Faculty & Staff Network at UMSL – a collaborative initiative between UMSL ADVANCE, Human Resources, Academic Affairs, and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

As we return to campus and start the new semester’s endeavors of transforming the lives of our students, it is also a good time to start planning our personal growth & transformation through diversity, equity, and inclusion learning and professional development opportunities.   ODEI offers a variety of resources and workshops to meet the needs of various learning styles and interests.

Implicit Bias Series –  Being able to recognize our unconscious biases and not act upon them is a key competence area for managers, supervisors, and anyone else who is concerned with fairness and equity in the workplace.  This research-based series will help participants better understand what implicit biases are, how they function, and how to mitigate their impact in our decisions and behaviors.   Individual who complete the series will earn the Advanced Skills in Unconscious Bias Badge.  All sessions take place on Fridays via  Zoom from 10-11:30 am. 

January 28         Part 1: Getting to know our amygdala

February 4         Part 2: Understanding the impact of fast thinking on decision-making

February 11       Part 3: Strategies for mitigating and overriding implicit bias

DEI in the Academic Workplace (Level 2) Overcoming Obstacles to Inclusion –  This is second min-course in the 3-part series, but you can participant in this session even if you have not yet completed level 1 (you can do that next time it is offered).  This series can be taken synchronously (zoom discussions  starting Feb 1) or asynchronously (Canvas discussions starting January 31).

ODEI Percipio Video Collection –  Percipio offers a massive collection of videos, books, and podcasts on a variety of workplace topic.  Visit the ODEI channel to view a set of short videos and courses that will support your learning and growth in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

ODEI Learning Resources –  A curated set of online multimedia resources on a multitude of topics including cultural competency, implicit bias, privilege, mindfulness and much more!  You can access these resources on any device, at any time, no log-in required (so you can also share with your broader community!).

Chancellor’s Certificate in Workplace Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion –  The Chancellor’s Certificate in Workplace Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) is a highly interactive, cohort-based,  online professional development program that explores the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.  This non-credit bearing program is open to all professionals in the Greater Saint Louis community. UMSL employees & alumni, as well as employees of non-profit organizations are eligible for a $150 discount.

UMSL’s Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is launching its first-ever professional development program open to professionals in the St. Louis community!

The Chancellor’s Certificate in Workplace Diversity, Equity & Inclusion  is a highly interactive, fully online, non-credit bearing professional development program that explores the concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.  Participation in this program will help prepare individuals to:

  • be advocates and leaders around diversity and inclusion issues
  • work more effectively with people from different backgrounds
  • make workplaces more welcoming and inclusive for everyone!

This credential will be of value in any job sector including business, education, public service, healthcare, etc.
