A Dilemma

  1. At GHC I attended a session on security by white hackers.  The part of session that confused me had to do with LinkedIn.  The speakers emphasized that everything on LinkedIn is an entry to your company.  That is,an entry point for cybersecurity.  For example, if you are working on new chip for a store credit card.  By identifying that project you are giving hackers information about your company’s security.  Don’t postcode and never use your company email address! Once you do, you have told hackers the patterns at your company.   Why this is troubling is that is the opposite of what we tell students.  We tell them to post code, papers, and capabilities.  Clearly, there needs to be compromise. For example, use a Gmail email account.  Separate your skills and languages from your experience.  Clearly you can post code and papers from class.  When providing information about current projects, talk in generalities: don’t talk about Java or C++, but rather an object-oriented language.  Don’t provide too many details. Always separate details from companies.  In other words, post enough to get the interview, but nothing more.
