Next Step is taking student applications and department submittals for Fall 2021 now through June 18th.
Next Step is an on-campus paid internship that bridges the college to career transition through practical workshops focused on resume-building experience, career preparation and self-discovery. Next step focuses on developing the students’ core competencies, including: Critical thinking/problem solving, teamwork/collaboration, leadership, career management, oral/written communications, digital technology, professionalism/work ethic, and global/intercultural fluency.
Return to Campus Being responsive to students and creating a lively campus experience is the primary goal in planning our return to campus. Supervisor training sessions for Return to Campus have been well attended and very successful. College, School and Division leaders are currently developing their return to campus plans, which may contain plans for remote work to expand service hours, improve the student experience and/or accessibility. When remote work is part of the plan, it will be guided by the UM System Telework Policy.
Each employee working remotely (full or part-time) after August 1, 2021, will need to complete an online telework agreement which will be approved by their supervisor. Employees should first meet with their Supervisor to discuss the plan and the terms for their remote work schedule before completing the online form. Supervisors have been asked to make approve remote work agreements for a maximum of the end of the Fall semester, though they are subject to change prior to that at the supervisor’s discretion. Therefore, the telework agreements will expire and need to be renewed after the end of the fall semester.
As we prepare for the fall semester Human Resources will host several sessions of a webinar during May to help managers plan and implement their staffing plans and their teams’ return to campus by August 1st. In this training, we will provide guidance on developing hybrid on-campus and remote schedules that meet the expectations provided in the Chancellor’s message and precautions provided by St. Louis County. All employees working even a partially remote work schedule after August 1, 2021, must have supervisor approval and a completed Telework Arrangement Form (link).
It’s strongly recommended that Employees and Supervisors discuss the specifics of the arrangement prior to completing the form. The Telework Arrangement Form has approval workflow capability that will route it to your supervisor and human resources. Telework arrangements will be developed and submitted for the fall semester and updated as the need arises. We look forward to working through this process with all UMSL employees. Managers will receive an email with a link to choose and register for a session.
The University of Missouri System’s new approach to performance feedback is grounded in the belief that frequent, honest conversations between managers and employees drive better performance and engagement.
Progress check-ins are regular discussions that will happen three times a year to: ~Discuss what is going well and what could be better, ~Check in on progress towards goals, ~Stay aligned on current projects, and ~Agree on next steps
In a performance-oriented culture, employees and managers are held accountable for whether goals and duties are accomplished throughout the year. Once a year, it is useful and valuable to summarize cumulative employee performance with an overall rating.
Managers will be able to access this information in self service, tile Team Performance.
Employees can log in to your myHR, tile Performance.

Effective January 1, 2021, UMSL will adopt the new Missouri minimum wage of $10.30 per hour. The University adopted the $9.45 minimum wage in August 2020 and the $8.60 minimum wage increase in July 2019. HR will process increases for UMSL staff and student employees who aren’t currently paid at the new minimum. There is no action required on your part. Equity increases for employee and students currently/historically paid above the minimum wage are not authorized at this time. While Missouri exempts Public entities like UMSL from complying with the minimum wage, many have expressed concern about our ability to compete in the local job market if we remained below the new minimum. The law increases the rate again effective Jan 1, 2022 and we will re-evaluate at that time whether or not adopt it in January.
