Do Faculty and Staff Still Need a Desk Phone?

Did you know that as an UMSL employee, you have the ability to receive phone calls from your laptop that would typically come to your office desk phone? Mitel Connect is available to install on Windows and Mac computers and includes softphone features enabling you to make, get, and manage calls exactly as your office desk phone would, using your office phone number. The benefits of using softphone features include:

  • Easy access to UMSL’s telephone directory, simply type in the name of the person you are trying to contact.
  • Ability to make calls from your campus phone number rather than using your personal phone number.
  • Staying connected, engaged, and available while you’re away from your office desk phone.
  • The elimination of physical phone hardware.

Mitel Connect is completely safe and provides faculty and staff with the convenience of using their UMSL phone number from anywhere. To install the Mitel Connect Software, visit the Software Center. When you are off campus, Virtual Private Network (VPN) is required to use Mitel Connect.

Calling All  Softphone Early Adopters!

ITS is inviting early adopters to help us shape this application into a key virtual communication resource for our campus. If you think that your office desk phone is no longer needed, please take the following steps:

  • Discuss it with your supervisor to confirm that your desk phone is not necessary for your departmental needs.
  • Contact the Help Desk at help.umsl.edu and let them know that you want to migrate to a softphone-only mode.
  • Telephone Services will follow up to ensure that your computer has the proper software and that you are assigned to a group with a dedicated server for making and receiving phone calls. IT will pick up your phone if you are a soft phone-only user.
  • Once you’re all set up, ITS wants to hear from you. Please let us know what you think of the softphone (questions, issues, feedback) at help.umsl.edu.
