Guidance on the use of Artificial Intelligence

ITS has received questions about Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Generative AI. Some of those questions are: Can we use it? What can we use it for? Is it safe?

ITS has examined the technical and legal aspects of this technology to see where and how it fits into our technology stack. To provide a bit more guidance, ITS has created a new AI webpage on the ITS website to help guide users through this exciting new journey.

This page contains information about campus approved AI apps and what data can be processed or submitted to the different AI sites or applications. It also contains links to recommendations from eLearning on how to use AI and what it can be used for in different environments.

Please note that many AI services can only be used for “public data” (DCL1). Public data is the type of data that is approved for the general public. If it were accidentally released or exposed, the exposure would not violate any privacy or legal responsibilities related to faculty, staff, students or third parties.

There are a few exceptions where the AI tools are covered under legal and privacy agreements with the AI vendor, like Microsoft 365 Copilot (the paid version), where more sensitive data can be processed. Those details can be found on the webpage. Usage or procurement of AI tools can be requested through the UMSL IT procurement processes found at this Technology Procurement webpage.
