On Wednesday, January 20, social media enthusiasts from around the city gathered to hear Vernon Ross (twitter.com/rosspr) teach “Everything You Need to Know About Podcasting.” Held at Llewellyn’s Pub in Webster Groves, this free event hosted by Social Media Club St. Louis captured a vibrant crowd eager to learn the best podcasting apps, shows, and practices. Vernon has been a guest speaker at UMSL as well as many other local colleges. His public speaking skills have been strengthened through everything from training sales forces to emceeing a major marketing conference.
Vernon’s best advice included listening to your own show before publishing, being genuine about sponsors, and asking for reviews. He explained that building an audience takes time, and that there’s less competition in podcasts than blogs. Recommendations included publishing 8 interview style shows to start, and practicing multiple times with a co-host to build rapport.
