Men’s and Women’s Track and Field
Kennedy Moore
matched the best-ever conference finish by a University of Missouri–St. Louis track and field athlete when she took second place in the women’s triple jump on Saturday in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held last Thursday through Saturday at Stokes Stadium in Kirksville, Missouri. Moore, a senior, posted a mark of 38 feet, 2.75 inches and equaled Benjamin VandenBrink‘s second-place finish in the men’s 5,000 meters at last year’s GLVC Championship. Moore also placed fourth in the women’s long jump with a mark of 18 feet, 1 inch, accounting for 13 of the UMSL women’s 14 points as they placed 11th in the team competition. Freshman Makayla Brown also scored one point for the Tritons with an eighth-place finish in the women’s triple jump after a leap of 35-4.5. Senior Jacob Warner was the top finisher on the UMSL men’s side with a fourth-place showing in the men’s 10,000 meters after clocking a time of 31 minutes, 10.16 seconds on Thursday evening. He also placed eighth in the men’s 5,000 meters on Saturday with a time of 14:54.40 and accounted for all six of the Tritons’ points in the team competition. The UMSL men finished 13th in what was the final meet of the 2024 season. Lewis won the women’s championship with 203 points while Missouri S&T won the men’s title with 226 points.

Softball
The Tritons got off to a good start in last week’s GLVC Tournament, pulling out a 6-4 nine-inning victory over McKendree in their opening-round game on Thursday and jumping out to a three-run lead after the first inning against top-seeded Indianapolis on Friday. But the Greyhounds rallied for a 5-4 victory, and UMSL’s offense failed to get going in Saturday’s elimination game against McKendree. The Bearcats held the Tritons to two hits in an 8-0 win that ended after five innings because of the mercy rule. Ashley Borowitz picked up all three decisions for UMSL, winning Thursday’s game in relief of Katie Schaake but taking the loss after surrendering five runs in each of her two starts. McKenzie Lamos drove in two runs in the opening win as the Tritons took advantage of three McKendree errors. Lamos and Gwyn Miller each had RBI singles during UMSL’s four-run first inning on Friday, but the Greyhounds came back with a run in the second and three in the sixth. The Tritons ended their season 28-27.

Baseball
UMSL dropped three out of four games against Missouri S&T in its final regular-season series. The Tritons’ lone victory came in the first game of a Friday doubleheader when they beat the Miners 7-2. RJ Elmore held S&T to two runs on seven hits and struck out six in six innings to collect the victory. Andrew Buescher drove in four runs, and Logan Mantz had three hits in the victory. The Miners pitchers yielded only seven runs in the weekend’s other three games combined as they won 6-1 in Thursday’s series opener, 5-4 in Friday’s second game and 8-2 in Saturday’s series finale. Senior first baseman Mitchell Green did hit a pair of home runs, giving him seven on the season. UMSL (30-20, 21-15 GLVC) secured the No. 5 seed in this week’s GLVC Tournament and will take on fourth-seeded Quincy in the tournament’s opening game at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Mtn. Dew Park in Marion, Illinois.

Women’s Tennis
The Tritons ended their season with a 4-2 loss to Rockhurst Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Missouri. UMSL won the opening point by taking two of the three doubles matches with Anna Domingo and Maja Lietzau beat Rockhurst’s Sofia Valdespino and Marina Magai 6-2 at No. 1 and Hannah Tse and Aleksandra Lopez topping Ella Coleman and Zuzanna Szmyd 6-4 at No. 2. The Hawks got the upper hand in singles, wining the first two matches with Coleman beating Domingo 6-0, 6-1 and Magai beating Lietzau 7-5, 6-4. Tse won her No. 3 singles match against Valdespino 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, but Rockhurst secured wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles to clinch the victory with Szmyd winning a three-set match against Lopez at No. 4 and Maria Baez beating Lauren Sweeney 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6. The Tritons finished their season 11-9.

Men’s Tennis
UMSL’s season came to an end Friday at the hands of 24th-ranked Drury, which swept the Tritons 4-0 in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Missouri. Jose Mayorga and Joshua Mackey gave UMSL one win in the doubles portion of the match when they beat Drury’s Marion Wilken and Luke Rieber 6-2 in the No. 2 doubles match, but the Panthers took the other two matches. They also won the first three singles matches with Yaroslav Sharyy beating Mayorga 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Sylvain Michaud topping Raphael Kerndl 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Wilken beating Juan Vigil 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. The Tritons finished the season with a record of 9-12.
