Women’s Soccer
The University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s soccer team scored a pair of victories, over Illinois Springfield and McKendree, over the weekend to get back to .500 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Jada Holloman scored a pair of goals Friday while leading the Tritons (6-3-2, 3-3-2 GLVC) to a 2-1 win over the Prairie Stars at Kiwanis Stadium in Springfield, Illinois. Holloman got UMSL on the board in the 23rd minute, but Illinois Springfield tied it on a goal by Katelyn Ward just before intermission. The match remained tied until the 60th minute when Holloman scored again, giving her eight goals on the season. Goalkeeper Mary Kate Neal made three saves to preserve the win. The Tritons jumped on the Bearcats with three first-half goals in a 3-0 victory. Kayley Judy opened the scoring in the fifth minute, and UMSL added tallies from Josie Maddox and Kennedi Hooks before the break. Neal made a season-best eight saves while recording her third shutout for the Tritons. UMSL will play host to Lewis on Friday and Indianapolis on Sunday at the Don Dallas Soccer Field.
Men’s Soccer
The Tritons played Illinois Springfield and No. 7 McKendree to 1-1 draws in back-to-back road matches over the weekend. UMSL struck first in both matches with Linus Saewe giving it a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute on Friday and Devin Livingstone scoring in the seventh minute on Sunday. It took the Prairie Stars until the 90th minute to pull even with the Tritons on Friday night as Or Levinstein scored with an assist from Joey Fitzgerald. The Bearcats notched their tying goal on a penalty shot from Philipp Schmidt in the 43rd minute. UMSL goalkeeper Austin Reis totaled five saves in the two matches. The Tritons will return home to take on Lewis on Friday and Indianapolis on Sunday.
Volleyball
No. 12 UMSL posted four-set victories over Lewis and Indianapolis over the weekend to run its winning streak to four. The Tritons dropped the opening set in both matches over the weekend before rallying for an 18-25, 25-9, 25-22, 25-21 win over the Flyers on Friday and a 24-26, 25-20, 25-19, 25-19 victory over the Greyhounds on Saturday at the Mark Twain Athletic Center. Alayna Santel led UMSL with 21 kills on Friday, and Addison Voorhees and Brooklyn Young had 13 and 12, respectively. Middle blocker Hannah Copeland led the attack against UIndy with a career-high 18 kills on Saturday, and Santel chipped in 15. Setter Caitlin Bishop combined for 108 assists in the two matches, and Skylar Weaver led UMSL’s defense with 57 digs. The Tritons (13-2, 4-1 GLVC) will take a break from conference play this week as they travel to Hammond, Indiana, to compete in the Midwest Region Crossover at the Hammond Sportsplex.
Women’s Golf
The 16th-ranked Tritons set a school record with the lowest 54-hole score in UMSL history while finishing sixth in a 14-team field at the National Preview, played at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder Creek, Nevada. The Tritons’ mark of 856 bested the previous school mark by 20 strokes and was 26 strokes behind tournament winner Cal State San Marcos. Senior Juliette Lecomte earned GLVC Player of the Week honors for the second straight week after tying for sixth with a total of 208, the second-lowest 54-hole individual score in school history. Junior Wilma Zanderau tied for 14th with the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in UMSL history, posting a total of 212. Freshman Mayan Covarrubias finished with an even par score of 216 (70-74-72) and was tied for 25th overall. Freshman Emmy Wahl and sophomore Hillary Currier posted scores of 222 and 225, respectively. Texas-Tyler’s Arnie Taguines was the individual medalist with a 54-hole score of 200. The Tritons will conclude their fall schedule when they play in the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate and the Hawaii Pacific Shark Shootout Oct. 21-26 in Hawaii.
Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
UMSL’s cross country teams wrapped up their regular season hosting the Brian T. Simpson Invitational at Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Missouri. The men finished fourth in a 14-team field, while the women finished ninth out of 16 teams. Junior Will Kaempfe was the top finisher for the men’s team, placing 12th in the 8-kilometer race with a time of 25 minutes, 28.86 seconds. Junior Toby Middleton was 14th in 25:30.20. Freshman Luke Stevenson and fifth-year senior Benjamin VandenBrink were 31st and 32nd with times of 26:08.75 and 26:10.76, respectively. Fifth-year senior Kayley Heeter was the top finisher for the women’s team, placing 37th with a time of 19:44.81. Freshman Bridget Ragan joined her in the top 60, finishing 56th at 20:26.54. St. Mary claimed the team title in both the men’s and women’s races. UMSL’s teams will next race in the 2024 GLVC Championship on Oct. 26 in Springfield, Illinois.
Women’s Tennis
The Tritons closed their fall schedule by routing Missouri Valley 6-0 on Saturday at the UMSL Tennis Courts. The teams of Hannah Tse and Aleksandra Lopez and Anna Favaron and Morgan Lint lost only three games between them while winning the two doubles matches. Tse and Lopez combined to lose only two games in winning the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches in straight sets. Favaron was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Deborah Mhizha at No. 3 singles, while Lint won 6-0, 7-5 at No. 4. Lauren Sweeney provided the last UMSL point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5. UMSL (2-0) will resume competition again in February.
Men’s Tennis
UMSL ended its fall schedule with a 5-2 victory over Missouri Valley on Saturday at the UMSL Tennis Courts. The Tritons won two of three doubles match against the Vikings with Marcos Navas and Percy Siercke topping Ruslan Anurev and Bogdan Zakharov 6-4 at No.1 and Tanin Ramnath and Bauty Rooney edging Alecson Deschamps and David Schalgeter 7-5 at No. 2. Navas, Ramnath and Siercke also won their singles matches with Navas pulling out a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 victory over Deschamps at No. 1 in the day’s most tightly contested match. Ramnath and Siercke each won in straight sets, as did Jose Yañez. UMSL (2-1) will resume play again in February.
