Shu Schiller, dean of the College of Business Administration, sat down with for a Q&A with The STL. Both Green Prophet and Phys.org carried stories about a research study Belen Alvestegui, a biology doctoral student, and Nathan Muchhala, associate professor of biology, collaborated on with researchers from the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Saint Louis Zoo and Washington University in St. Louis. The study, supported by the National Science Foundation, examined the chemical compounds in leaves collected from the Madidi region of the Andes in Bolivia. The researchers found an astounding amount of chemical diversity in the tropical forest leaves, with more than a third of the identified compounds being terpenoids – a class of natural chemicals that plants use to fend off insects and diseases.
