Men’s and Women’s Cross Country
University of Missouri–St. Louis senior runner Will Kaempfe is off to a blistering start to the season. He followed last week’s win at the University of Illinois Springfield Prairie Star Invitational with another victory Friday in the 8-kilometer race at the Larry Young Invitational at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Missouri. Kaempfe was running neck and neck with Columbia College’s Kalieb Redda three-quarters of the way through the race but pulled ahead over the last 2 kilometers to win by more than four seconds in a time of 25 minutes, 33.32 seconds. Kaempfe led the UMSL men to a sixth-place finish in the team competition. Luke Stevenson was UMSL second-best finisher, crossing the line in 41st place in 28:08.67. Devon Fanning also made it into the top 50, placing 49th in 28:34.23. Junior Bella Massaro was once again the Tritons’ top finisher in the 5-kilometer women’s race, crossing the line 15th. She posted a time of 21:20.10 and helped the women finish eighth. UMSL will race again Friday in the the Bradley Intercollegiate at Detweiler Park in Peoria, Illinois.
Women’s Golf
The 19th-ranked Tritons opened their season by winning the University of Indianapolis Fall Invitational last Tuesday at Champions Pointe Golf Club in Henryville, Indiana. UMSL finished with a combined 54-hole score of 869 to beat the host team by four shots. Ferris State finished third, 11 shots off the lead. Hillary Currier led the Tritons and placed third overall with a total of 213, one shot back of Tiffin’s Laura Goetz, who claimed medalist honors by winning a scorecard decision over UIndy’s Ava Ray. Wilma Zanderau placed fourth individually with a score of 214 and joined Currier on the all-tournament team. Mayan Covarrubias was tied for 12th with a score of 221, Hope Williams tied for 16th at 222, and Emmy Wahl finished 23rd at 225. UMSL will compete in next week’s Dallas Baptist University Classic beginning Monday at Oakmont Country Club in Corinth, Texas.
Volleyball
UMSL went 3-1 over the weekend at the Rosella Meier Fall Classic, losing to No. 8 Nebraska-Kearney – the tournament host – in three sets but beating South Dakota Mines, Sioux Falls and Adams State. Alayna Santel registered a team-high 56 kills in the four matches, including 20 in a five-set win over South Dakota Mines. Maggie Johnson added 55 kills in the four-matches, including a team-high 14 in Saturday’s sweep of Adams State. Setter Caitlin Bishop directed the attack throughout and averaged 40.5 assists. Skylar Weaver led the team with 91 digs. UMSL will head to Florida for next weekend’s Hyatt Place Bash at the Beach, which begins Friday in Boca Raton. Coach Ryan Young‘s team will face top-ranked Lynn in its opening match at the de Hoernle Sports Center on the Lynn campus.
Men’s Soccer
The Tritons settled for a 1-1 draw Sunday as they opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play at home against Drury. UMSL scored first as Michael Quinn headed in a cross from Tommy Wortham in the 23rd minute, but the Panthers pulled even on Mason Platts’ goal in the 62nd minute. The Tritons outshot Drury 10-9. Will Winkler and Jack Franklin split time in goal, and each made one save. The tie came after a 2-1 loss at Roosevelt on Wednesday in Chicago. Alexander Ramirez Aoueiss scored UMSL’s lone goal in the 81st minute with the Tritons trailing 2-0. Roosevelt outshot UMSL 16-11, and Franklin made two saves in goal. The Tritons will continue conference play at home next weekend with matches against Rockhurst on Friday and Southwest Baptist on Sunday at the Don Dallas Soccer Field.
Women’s Soccer
UMSL went 0-1-1 last week, losing 1-0 in a midweek match against visiting Northwest Missouri State but tying Drury 1-1 in Sunday’s GLVC opener at the Don Dallas Soccer Field. Natalie Scott scored the Tritons’ lone goal of the week on Sunday, putting in a rebound from Madi Riege in the 37th minute to even the match. There was no scoring the rest of the way despite UMSL getting off 21 shots to Drury’s nine. Goalkeepr Rylee Griffith made four saves on Sunday after making two in Wednesday’s loss. UMSL remains at home this week, taking on Rockhurst on Friday and Southwest Baptist on Sunday.
Women’s Tennis
The Tritons rolled to a 7-0 victory in their first dual meet of the season on Friday, against Missouri Baptist at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. Hannah Tse, Aleksandra Lopez, Millie Wileman, Morgan Lint, Anna Favaron and Giuliana Cunza were all straight-sets winners in singles. Tse and Wileman were taken to a tiebreaker in their No. 1 doubles match against Yvonne Shannon and Melissa Jangarasheva but prevailed 7-6 (4). UMSL also competed in Saturday’s Redhawk Invitational, hosted by Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, but the team is now idle until an Oct. 11 dual against Missouri Valley.
Men’s Tennis.
UMSL fell 6-1 against Missouri Baptist in its opening dual meet of the season on Friday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. Henry Roberts secured the Tritons’ only point when he pulled out a three-set win over Sebastian Junghanns 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), (10-7) at No. 3 singles. Percy Siercke dropped the No. 1 singles match in three sets against Luca Ebenriter, losing 10-8 in the match tiebreaker. UMSL will next play on Oct. 3 against William Woods.
