UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

Men’s Golf
The No. 22 University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s golf team tied for first in the team standings at the Doc Spragg Invitational but lost a two-hole playoff to host Findlay for title in the 54-hole tournament, held last week at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio. The two teams each posted combined scores of 859, finishing at 5 under par in the 17-team field. Findlay got the upper hand in the playoff by posting four pars and a bogey on the second playoff hole while the Tritons finished with four pars and a double bogey. Sophomores Logan Mayo and Trigg Lindahl each finished in a tie for fifth individually with total scores of 214 and were named to the all-tournament team. Mayo was also awarded Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week honors for his work after posting rounds of 69, 71 and 74. Leo Baudry finished in a tie for 12th with a total of 216. Dani Solvera was tied for 24th with a score of 219. Cedarville’s Aiden Hibbard won medalist honors by defeating Hillsdale’s Robert Thompson in a one-hole playoff on No. 18 after both players tied with totals of 212. Hibbard sank a birdie putt while Thompson three-putted for a bogey. UMSL is back in action this week at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate hosted by Hawaii-Hilo at the Waikoloa Golf Resort in Waikoloa Village, Hawaii, and it will wrap up its fall schedule later this week at the HPU Shark Shootout at Pearl at Kalauao.

Women’s Golf
The 19th-ranked Tritons placed ninth out of 16 teams in last week’s LeeAnn Noble Memorial in Dahlonega, Georgia. UMSL’s posted a combined score of 887 in the 54-hole tournament, held at the Achasta Golf Course. Hillary Currier was the Tritons’ top finisher, tying for 11th with a score of 215, including a final-round 71, which brought her GLVC Player of the Week honors. Teammate Wilma Zanderau tied for 22nd at 219, and Emmy Wahl was 42nd with a total of 224. Anderson’s Olivia Pellerin was the individual medalist with a total of 206, two shots better than Wingate’s Olivia Meinecke. But Wingate won the team title with a combined score of 849. The Tritons will finish the fall portion of their schedule this week as they compete in the the Intercollegiate at Nemacolin at Mystic Rock Golf Club in Farmington, Pennsylvania.

Women’s Soccer
UMSL posted back-to-back 3-0 road victories over the weekend against Indianapolis on Friday and Lewis on Sunday. The Tritons peppered the Greyhounds with 30 shots – 10 on net – and got goals from Karley Kinzinger, Josie Maddox and Ella Anselm. Taylor Martin had a pair of assists, and Rylee Griffith made three saves while collecting her sixth shutout of the season. Maddie Clark, Maddox and Natalie Scott each notched goals in Sunday’s victory against the Flyers, and UMSL won despite getting outshot 14-11. Griffith stopped five shots for her seventh shutout. Maddox and Anselm are now tied for the team lead with four goals on the season. UMSL (8-3-2, 7-1-2 GLVC) will return home this week to face Upper Iowa on Friday and Quincy on Sunday at the Don Dallas Soccer Field.

Men’s Soccer
The Tritons split road matches against Indianapolis and Lewis over the weekend, beating the Greyhounds 3-2 on Friday in Indianapolis but falling 1-0 against the Flyers on Sunday in Romeoville, Illinois. Isaac Valverde‘s goal in the 86th minute lifted UMSL to Friday’s victory, the Tritons first over UIndy since a 2-1 win at Key Stadium on Oct. 14, 2016. The Tritons also got goals from Max Matarelli at the 29-minute mark and Pablo Nodar in the 53rd minute, but each time the Greyhounds answered. Valverde’s first collegiate goal came from the top of the 18-yard box off a pass from Melo Mensah and snapped a 2-2 tie. UIndy couldn’t match, and goalkeeper Jack Franklin picked up his third win of the season after making five saves. UMSL lost a defensive battle against Lewis, giving up the lone goal to Hubert Grele in the 51st minute on Sunday. The two teams combined for only five shots, only three on goal. The Tritons (4-4-5, 3-3-4 GLVC) will play host to Upper Iowa on Friday and Quincy on Sunday in their final homestand of the regular season.

Volleyball
UMSL ran its winning streak to nine matches after knocking off Hillsdale, Davenport and Wayne State last weekend at the Midwest Regional Volleyball Crossover, held at the Hammond Sportsplex in Hammond, Indiana. The Tritons beat Hillsdale 22-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-22 and followed it up by sweeping Davenport 25-16, 25-17, 25-18 on Friday. They dispatched of Wayne State 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22 on Saturday. Alayna Santel finished with a team-high 49 kills on the weekend. Maggie Johnson added 37 kills, and Bridget Cassady added 33 kills. Setter Caitlin Bishop averaged 45 assists in the three matches while also contributing a total of 37 digs. Skylar Weaver notched 63 digs on the weekend, including 27 in the win over Wayne State. UMSL returns to GLVC play this week and will put its unblemished conference record on the line against Missouri S&T on Friday and Maryville on Saturday. Both matches are at the Mark Twain Athletic Center.

Men’s Tennis.
The Tritons closed out the fall schedule with a 6-1 victory over Missouri Valley on Sunday at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. UMSL swept the doubles matches and got singles victories from Percy Siercke, Daniel Bedecio, Henry Roberts, Joan Garros and Andrea Ricart. Sierecke, Roberts and Ricart all needed three sets to pull out their winss with Siercke beating Alex Ballinger 6-3, 4-6, (10-2); Roberts knocking off Gui Silva 0-6, 6-3, (10-8); and Ricart beating Luca Stadifield 7-5, 2-6, (10-6). The women’s team canceled its own dual meet against Missouri Valley. UMSL’s men’s team (1-2) next plays Feb. 8, when it opens the spring schedule with a dual meet against Saint Louis University.
