UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

Women’s Basketball
The University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s basketball team stretched its winning streak to five games with a pair of road victories last week against Lewis and Indianapolis. The Tritons trailed by five points heading into the final five minutes but closed on a 10-4 charge to pull out a 64-62 victory on Thursday. Jayden Kuper started the surge with a 3-pointer, and Mara Rieder lifted UMSL into the lead with a layup and then a free throw. Another 3-pointer by Kuper put the Tritons in front 63-58 with 1:40 remaining, and they held on. Rieder finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double. Kuper added 18 points, and Anna Costa Riera scored 11 and was 3 for 3 from 3-point range. UMSL started and finished strong in Saturday’s 60-43 victory over the Greyhounds. The Tritons outscored the home team 18-6 in the first quarter and 18-5 in the last. Reider finished with a team-high 18 points. Kuper had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Morgan Ramthun had 11 points and eight boards. UMSL (6-1, 3-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference) will travel to Maryville on Tuesday for a game rescheduled from Dec. 1 because of inclement weather and will play host to Michigan Tech on Saturday.

Men’s Basketball
The Tritons split road games against Lewis and Indianapolis last week, beating the Flyers 78-59 on Thursday but stumbling against the Greyhounds 69-64 on Saturday. UMSL forced 22 turnovers in the win at Lewis with Miles Boland and Jake Hamilton combining for eight of their team’s 11 steals. Boland had five steals and led three players in double figures with 18 points. Demetris Phillips scored 11 points and had a team-best six rebounds off the bench, and Hamilton scored 10 points. The Tritons led 40-23 at halftime and never looked back. Coach Bob Sundvold’s team forced 20 turnovers and picked up nine steals against UIndy, but it wasn’t as sharp offensively, shooting just 37.7% from the field, including 4 for 20 from 3-point range. UMSL trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half, including with 1:10 remaining. The Tritons mounted an 11-2 run in the final 1:02 but got no closer than 67-64 with after Boland’s three free throws with just over 5 seconds remaining. The Greyhounds’ Carmelo Harris closed the game with two free throws to give him a game-high 25 points. Hamilton finished with a team-high 17 points, and Vincent Davis III scored 15, but no one else reached double figures. The Tritons (5-4, 1-2 GLVC) will visit Maryville on Tuesday in a game rescheduled from Dec. 1 because of inclement weather and will host Wisconsin–Parkside on Saturday.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming
UMSL’s swimming teams split their dual meet at Quincy on Saturday with the women winning 180-81 while the men fell 132-130 at the BOS Aquatic Center in Quincy, Illinois. Audrey Lantz, Justice Beard and Stella Garrison each won two individual events and were part of winning relay squads. Lantz finished first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.21 seconds and also was first in the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 1.37 seconds. She also finished third in the 100-yard butterfly and swam the leadoff leg for UMSL’s winning 200-yard freestyle relay team. The All-American Beard also won two events, winning the 500-yard and 1,000-yard freestyle races in 5:09.95 and 10:34:41, respectively. She swam the anchor leg for the winning 200 freestyle relay team. Garrison took first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.58) and 200-yard individual medley (2:17.43) and helped UMSL win the 200-yard medley relay. Madison Bottorff won the 50-yard freestyle relay in 25.82 seconds and turned in a split of 25.47 seconds in the 200 free relay. Romina Itzkovich swam on the winning team in both the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay and posted a personal-best time of 2:31.87 in the 200 breakstroke. Mattia Nardi, Mikael Larsson, Kaleb Suitor, Aaron Wicklund and Landon Hanesworth each won individual events for the men. Nardi won the 200 butterfly in 1:53.12 and swam the anchor leg on the winning 200 freestyle relay team. Larsson finished first in the 200 back at 1:56.18 and was also runner-up in the 500 and 1,000 freestyles. Suitor won the 100 fly in a time of 51.33 seconds, Wicklund took the top spot in the 200 breaststroke in 2:11.23 and Hanesworth won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 59.24 seconds. UMSL will next race against Missouri S&T and Southwest Baptist on Dec. 19 at the S&T Swimming Pool in Rolla, Missouri.
