
Sophomore Mayan Covarrubias earned Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week recognition after tying for medalist honors at the Findlay Spring Invitational, held at Boone Trace National Golf Club in Richmond, Kentucky.
Women’s Golf
University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s golfer Mayan Covarrubias tied for medalist honors at the Findlay Spring Invitational at Boone Trace National Golf Club in Richmond, Kentucky. The Tritons sophomore matched Findlay’s Avery Thompson with a combined score of 148 through 36 holes, and Monday’s final round was canceled due to high winds and cold temperatures. Covarrubias led UMSL to a third-place finish on the team leaderboard with a total of 619. Wilma Zanderau tied for eighth with a score of 154, and Hillary Currier and Josefin Hansson also cracked the top 15, tying for 14th with totals of 157. Findlay won the team title with a combined score of 609, two shots better than runner-up Grand Valley State. UMSL will next play in the Grand Harbor Classic beginning March 30 at The Patriot at Grand Harbor in Ninety Six, South Carolina.
Softball
The Tritons went 3-1 over the weekend, splitting Saturday’s doubleheader against Missouri S&T before sweeping Sunday’s doubleheader against Lincoln at the UMSL Softball Field. UMSL took the opener against the Miners 4-2, scoring all four runs in the fifth inning. Jamie Widule had a two-run double that lifted the Tritons into the lead. Kiley Sullivan also had an RBI double in the frame. UMSL fell behind 7-0 in Saturday’s second game as Missouri S&T slammed four home runs. The Tritons rallied for four runs in the seventh, including a three-run homer by Sullivan, but it was not enough in a 7-4 loss. Sullivan continued her hot hitting on Sunday against Lincoln, including a grand slam that capped UMSL’s 10-0 five-inning victory. The Tritons banged out 16 hits in their five innings. Kenzie Stoltz drove in three runs. Ashley Borowitz tossed five shutout innings, surrendering one hit while striking out seven. Borowitz also picked up the win in relief in Sunday’s second game, an 8-4 victory. Sullivan had an RBI double in the sixth to cap the scoring, but the star of the game was Kaytie Kossina, who went 3 for 4 with two runs and five RBI. May Pasqualini scored three runs. UMSL (13-15) improved to 6-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Tritons will next play host to Maryville in a Sunday doubleheader at the UMSL Softball Field.
Baseball
UMSL split its weekend series at Quincy, dropping Friday’s series opener 12-5, sweeping a Saturday doubleheader 5-3 and 7-3 but stumbling in Sunday’s series finale 16-15. Mitch Bonczkowski hit five home runs and drove in 14 runs in the four-game series. Bonczkowski and Justin Terhaar both homered in the fifth inning of Friday’s opener as the Tritons fought back from a 5-0 deficit and pulled within a run before the Hawks pulled away again. Bonczkowski had a two-run single and sacrifice fly to lead UMSL to its Game 1 win on Saturday. He then hit two home runs and drove in four runs in Game 2. Bryce Nicolay and Eli Cartwright each earned victories on the mound. Nicolay won Saturday’s first game by holding Quincy to six hits and three runs in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out six. Cartwright also held the Hawks to six hits and three runs in five innings. Bonczkowski had another big day on Sunday, going 4 for 6 with two home runs and four RBI. UMSL pounded out 16 hits. But the Tritons were done in by an eight-run eighth inning after they’d opened up a 14-8 lead through the top half of the frame. UMSL (11-13, 5-3 GLVC) will open up a four-game series against Southwest Baptist on Friday at the UMSL Baseball Field.
Women’s Tennis
The Tritons had their three-match winning streak snapped Saturday when they lost their dual meet against Northwest Missouri State 4-2 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center, but the team bounced back to beat No. 41 Rockhurst 5-2 on Saturday. UMSL won the doubles point against the Bearcats thanks to victories from Hannah Tse and Morgan Lint at No. 1 doubles and Millie Wileman and Aleksandra Lopez at No. 2 doubles, but Tse was the only Triton to prevail in singles. She pulled out a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) victory in her No. 1 singles match against Miru Nonaka. UMSL swept their doubles matches against the Hawks on Sunday, and got straight-sets singles wins from Wileman at No. 2 singles, Lopez at No. 3, Lint at No. 4 and Giuliana Cunza at No. 5. Tse was up a set in her No. 1 singles match against Ella Coleman when Lint clinched the team victory. The Tritons (6-2) will head to California during spring break week and will play dual meets against Point Loma on Tuesday, Azusa Pacific on Wednesday and Westmont on Friday.
Men’s Tennis
UMSL upset No. 50 Northwest Missouri State 4-3 on Saturday but fell to Rockhurst 5-2 on Sunday. Both matches were held at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center. The Tritons took the doubles point against the Bearcats after victories from Tommy Griese and Percy Siercke at No. 1 doubles and Daniel Berdecio and Andrea Ricart at No. 3 doubles. But it took three three-set singles wins for UMSL to edge Northwest Missouri State. Griese won 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) over Dominik Wijntjes at No. 1. Henry Roberts pulled out a 6-0, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Bernardo Henriques at No. 3 singles, and Jose Yanez won 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) against Andres Rodrigues at No. 6 singles in a match that ultimately decided the dual. The Tritons again grabbed the doubles point on Sunday against the Hawks as Roberts and Joan Garros pulled out a 7-6 (4) victory at No. 2 doubles and Berdecio and Ricart won 6-3 at No. 3. But Roberts managed the only point in singles, beating Ollie Dickason 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) at No. 3 singles. Berdecio, Ricart and Bautista Rooney all lost three-set singles matches while Yanez lost two tiebreakers while falling in straight sets. UMSL (3-6) will spend spring break in California, taking on Point Loma on Tuesday, Azusa Pacific on Wednesday and Westmont on Friday.
