University of Missouri–St. Louis sophomore electrical engineering major Mattia Nardi takes off in the lead in the UMSL Recreation and Wellness Center‘s Cardboard Boat Racing event on March 12.

Campus Recreation provided students with the materials to create their boats and teams raced the length of the pool. Nardi, a member of the UMSL men’s swimming team, had an early lead on sophomore psychological sciences major Chiara Alberola, a member of the women’s swimming team, in the race. Senior mathematics and computer science major Paul Williams’ boat, meanwhile, collapsed from the competition.

The Cardboard Boat Racing event was held as part of an ongoing celebration of 10 years of Campus Rec at UMSL. Next up is the Hightide Hangout scheduled for April 9.
