UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

The University of Missouri–St. Louis went 1-2 at the GLVC-GLIAC Crossover Tournament last weekend. The UMSL Tritons defeated Ashland, 3-2, on Friday in their opening match before suffering 3-1 losses to No. 17 Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday. UMSL (13-11, 7-5 GLVC) returns home this weekend with a pair of GLVC matches. The Tritons will host Saint Joseph’s on Saturday and Indianapolis on Sunday.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis began the week with a nonconference sweep of Missouri Baptist on Tuesday and posted another 3-0 victory on Friday in Great Lakes Valley Conference play over William Jewell. Rockhurst then took a 3-0 match on Saturday over the UMSL Tritons. UMSL (12-9, 6-5 GLVC) will travel to Aurora, Ill., this weekend to compete in the annual GLVC-GLIAC Crossover Tournament. The Tritons will play Ashland on Friday and Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State on Saturday.

Sophomore Jon Huelsman scored three goals for the UMSL Tritons, including both in the upset victory over the Hawks. The Tritons (6-6, 5-5 GLVC) close out the home portion of their schedule this weekend, hosting Illinois Springfield on Friday and Southern Indiana on Sunday.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis bounced back from a 3-0 loss at No. 18 ranked Truman State on Friday night post a 3-0 victory at Quincy on Saturday. Senior Chelsea Burkle averaged 4.17 kills per set in the two matches to pace the offense. UMSL (9-6, 5-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference) will host Lindenwood Tuesday night in a nonconference contest before returning to the road in GLVC play, traveling to Drury on Friday night and Missouri S&T on Saturday.

The UMSL Tritons defeated Saint Joseph’s 2-0 on Friday night with goals from Jaylon Griffith and Jessica Mincher before picking up a 1-0 victory over Indianapolis on Sunday behind the game-winner from Hannah Kaloupek. The Tritons (4-2, 2-2 GLVC) return to the road this weekend, traveling to Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday and to Lewis on Sunday.

Sophomore midfielder Sidney Allen of the University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s soccer team has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, as announced today by the league office. Wisconsin-Parkside freshman goalkeeper Mallory Geurts was tabbed as the GLVC Defensive Player of the Week. The 2013 season marks the first year GLVC men’s and women’s soccer has honored an Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis opened its schedule with a pair of victories, beginning the season at 2-0 for the first time since 2001. The UMSL Tritons competed in the Embassy Suites Invitational, last weekend, hosted by Lindenwood. UMSL defeated Emporia State, 2-0, in the opener on Friday, before topping the host team on Sunday, 2-1. The Tritons travel to Quincy on Friday for the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener before hosting Truman State on Sunday in their home opener.

Bob Bone remains men’s basketball leading scorer 36 years later

His name still dominates the record books, and his numbers remain untouched more than three decades later. Bob Bone has cemented his name within the University of Missouri–St. Louis community since his time as a baseball and basketball All-American, where he starred for the UMSL Rivermen from 1973-77. His legendary reputation has remained intact throughout the years in the St. Louis area, as has his presence. Now the athletic director at Clayton (Mo.) High School, Bone has never let his time and experiences at UMSL escape his memory as a player, coach or professional.

The 2012-13 University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s and women’s tennis teams have been honored for excellence in the classroom by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Both teams were awarded the ITA All-Academic Team, while five Tritons were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.

As UMSL celebrates its 50th anniversary throughout 2013 with the Jubilee, it seems fitting to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the only NCAA Division II National Championship the university has won in its first half century. The men of the 1973 Rivermen soccer team are to thank, bringing home the championship trophy after blanking The University of California–Fullerton with a score of 3-0 on Dec. 8 in Springfield, Mass.

He will replace Steve Tappmeyer who during his tenure led the UMSL Tritons to the team’s most consecutive winning seasons (three) since the first four years of the program, 1966-1970. But Sundvold is up to the task.

73 UMSL student-athletes named to Academic All-GLVC Team

The Great Lakes Valley Conference has released its list of Academic All-Conference selections for the 2012-13 academic year, and the University of Missouri–St. Louis had a record 73 student-athletes receive recognition for their academic accomplishments.

Hannah Perryman named Third Team All-American by NFCA and Daktronics, Inc.

Freshman pitcher Hannah Perryman of the University of Missouri–St. Louis softball team has been named a 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Softball All-American. Perryman was selected to the third team and is just the fourth player in program history to be named a NCAA Division II All-American. She was also named a Third Team All-American by Daktronics, Inc.
