The University of Missouri–St. Louis (5-1, 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference) returns to the court on Wednesday to host Culver-Stockton. The UMSL Tritons have been idle since a 69-35 win over Maryville on Dec. 7 in the GLVC opener. UMSL will then close out the nonconference portion of its schedule in Owensboro, Ky., at the Fairfield Inn Christmas Classic hosted by Kentucky Wesleyan this weekend. The Tritons play the host school on Saturday night before a Sunday meeting with Davis & Elkins.

Though many Americans have not heard of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the group finally got its deserved time in the limelight last weekend when it collected the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway. University of Missouri–St. Louis supporter Will Carpenter is particularly pleased for the group’s recognition, which makes sense, seeing as how he played an integral role in creating the treaty that lead to the formation of the OPCW.

Louisa Werner wakes up at 8 a.m. From 9 to 10:45 a.m. she fulfills her duties as a research assistant in the psychology lab on campus before attending her 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. class. Then it’s on to tennis practice from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. She changes just in time for one more night class, officially concluding her day at 9:30 p.m.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis picked up two wins in its own Hilton Holiday Classic. The UMSL Tritons defeated Harris-Stowe, 76-36, on Friday before an 86-47 win over Missouri Baptist on Saturday. Senior Jessica Zavoral averaged 14.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals, while shooting 68.8 percent from the field, in the two games. UMSL (4-1) will host Maryville in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener on Saturday in its lone game of the week.

More than 1,400 people visited the university on Nov. 23 for UMSL Day and 123 prospective students completed applications. Both figures broke records for the biannual event, which gives prospective students and their families the opportunity to tour the university’s 350-acre campus, talk with faculty members and attend information sessions on admissions and financial aid. The Office of Admissions held UMSL Day at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center.

UMSL went 1-1 at the Pops Duncan Classic, hosted by Trevecca Nazarene last weekend. The Tritons suffered a 71-67 loss to the host school before rebounding with a 71-57 victory over Grand Valley State. Senior Jessica Zavoral averaged 17 points to lead UMSL. UMSL (2-1) will host the Hilton Holiday Classic this Friday and Saturday. The Tritons will entertain Harris Stowe on Friday and Missouri Baptist on Saturday. Both games are set to tip-off at 3 p.m.

As Devon Brandon entered the Millennium Student Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis Thursday morning she was greeted by the smiling faces of fellow UMSL students dressed in crisp green new aprons and hocking newspapers. The haggling was part of an annual St. Louis tradition known as Old Newsboys Day that benefits more than 250 local charities.

To honor their 50th Jubilee this year, employees at the University of Missouri–St. Louis gave nearly $80,000 to the United Way of Greater St. Louis and Community Health Charities of Kansas and Missouri campaigns, breaking the campus record. The former McCluer North High School (Florissant, Mo.) standout and Saint Louis University recruit is now a guard on the UMSL Tritons after battling injuries for several years.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis officially opened its 2013-14 season with a 1-1 record at the GLVC-GLIAC Challenge last weekend, hosted by Lake Superior State. The UMSL Tritons lost their opener, 76-72, to the host Lakers on Saturday before bouncing back for a 78-66 defeat of Northwood on Sunday. Junior Aareon Smith led UMSL with 18.5 points per game. The Tritons (1-1) will entertain Upper Iowa on Thursday in its home opener.
