Nearly 70 older adults received vision screenings at a recent health fair organized by the College of Nursing at the University of Missouri–St. Louis and the St. Louis Housing Authority.

Seven optometry students took part in the health fair at the St. Alphnosus Catholic Church in St. Louis.

“We performed visual acuities, color vision, eye pressures, external and internal health exams,” said Stephanie Woo, a clinical resident in the College of Optometry. “Many patients expressed their gratitude, as they had no idea how important dilated eye exams were.”

She said many of the patients they saw had systemic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, and they were able to explain the importance of annual eye exams in people with these conditions.

Other participants included Washington University in St. Louis and Saint Louis University Cancer Center, as well as podiatrists and dentists.
