The Arianna String Quartet will perform at 8 p.m. May 4 at the Touhill Center at UMSL.

The Arianna String Quartet will close out its 2011-12 concert series with a performance at 8 p.m. May 4 at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

Doors will open at 7:10 p.m. for a pre-concert discussion with members of the Arianna String Quartet. Tickets are $23. They are on sale now at the Touhill ticket office; online at touhill.org or by phone at 314-516-4949.

The performance titled “Famous Last Words,” is being hailed as a musical odyssey through final works for string quartet written by three leviathans of the quartet repertoire.

The group will begin the evening with Felix Mendelssohn’s dazzling Andante and Scherzo, Op.81, a seldom-heard work full of virtuosic appeal, and followed with Bela Bartok’s evocative Quartet No. 6, a seminal work of the early 20th century. The season will come to an end with Beethoven’s final composition, the splendid Quartet in F Major, Op.135.

Guest violist Victoria Chiang will take part in a performance of Antonin Leopold Dvořák’s String Quintet in E-flat Major, Op. 97. She’s a founding member of the Aspen String Trio.

The Arianna is the resident quartet at UMSL.
