Bob Sundvold, new head coach of the UMSL men's basketball team

Bob Sundvold speaks at a news conference on May 8 at the Mark Twain Athletic & Fitness Center at UMSL. He is the new head coach of the UMSL men’s basketball team.

Bob Sundvold will be filling big shoes when he begins this fall as head coach of the University of Missouri–St. Louis men’s basketball team. He will replace Steve Tappmeyer who during his tenure led the UMSL Tritons to the team’s most consecutive winning seasons (three) since the first four years of the program, 1966-1970. But Sundvold is up to the task.

“I think ‘Tapp’ did a great job, and I want to keep it rolling,” he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “I’m excited to be here, looking forward to the challenge.”

As the newspaper points out, UMSL competes in one of the country’s best Division II leagues, the Great Lakes Valley Conference, which produced national champions in two of the last three seasons.

“We have some work to do, no question, but we also have a lot working in our favor here,” Sundvold told the Post-Dispatch. “UMSL has a lot to offer – it’s a top-level school located in an area with a lot of basketball talent to draw from – and we’re looking to take advantage of that.”
