UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

Volleyball
The No. 11 University of Missouri–St. Louis volleyball team went 2-1 over the weekend in the 16th annual Midwest Region Crossover at the Hammond Sportsplex in Hammond, Indiana. The Tritons had back-to-back sweeps against Wayne State and Ashland on Friday, beating the former 25-16, 25-19, 25-22 and the latter 26-24, 25-18, 25-22. But UMSL dropped a top-15 matchup against No. 15 Grand Valley State on Saturday, falling 20-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-19. The Tritons were outhit .233 to .127 against the Lakers, committing 26 attack errors in 142 chances. They only had 28 errors combined in their first two matches. Addison Voorhees led UMSL with 33 kills on the weekend, and Alayna Santel had 31. Setter Caitlin Bishop totaled 112 assists, and Skylar Weaver tallied a team-high 48 digs. The Tritons (15-3, 4-1 GLVC) resume Great Lakes Valley Conference play this week, visiting Maryville on Friday and Missouri S&T on Saturday.

Women’s Soccer
The Tritons ran their winning streak to four consecutive matches as they knocked off Lewis and Indianapolis over the weekend at the Don Dallas Soccer Field. UMSL scored three second-half goals to pull away for a 4-1 victory over the Flyers on Friday night. Kayley Judy snapped a 1-1 tie when she scored in the first minute of the second half, and Jaycee Cotton doubled the lead when she tacked on a goal about six minutes later. Aubree Wallace capped the scoring in the 68th minute. Josie Maddox had given the Tritons a 1-0 lead when she scored her fourth goal of the season less than four minutes into the opening half. Offense was a little harder to come by against the Greyhounds on Sunday as UMSL honored nine seniors before a 1-0 victory. Jada Holloman scored her ninth goal of the season in the 14th minute, and the Tritons made it hold up behind a strong defensive effort that held UIndy to only two shots on goal. UMSL’s Mary Kate Neal made two saves for her fourth shutout of the season, tying a career high. The Tritons (8-3-2, 5-3-2 GLVC) will be on the road this week as they visit Quincy on Friday and Upper Iowa on Sunday.

Men’s Soccer
UMSL could only manage one draw after playing two tight matches at home against Lewis and Indianapolis over the weekend. The Flyers blanked the Tritons 1-0 on Friday night with Makonnen Stampley providing the match’s only goal in the 21st minute. The two teams combined for only eight shots. UMSL scored on a penalty kick from Jon Campbell as it opened up a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute against the 22nd-ranked Greyhounds on Sunday, but UIndy drew even with a goal by Jona Hogle in the 72nd minute. Tritons goalkeeper Austin Reis made a pair of saves to help salvage the tie. UMSL (3-4-6, 1-3-6 GLVC) hasn’t allowed more than one goal in any match since Sept. 10, but it has gone 1-3-6 in the 10 matches since. The Tritons will travel to Quincy on Friday and Upper Iowa on Sunday as they look for their first victory since Sept. 22.

Men’s Golf
Freshman Trigg Lindahl led the 23rd-ranked Tritons to a fifth-place finish out of 19 teams in the Doc Spragg Fall Invitational last Monday and Tuesday at the Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio. Lindahal finished with a 54-hole total of 211, highlighted by a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th hole during a final round 70, to place third individually. He was seven shots back of medalist Drew Cable of Grand Valley State. He earned a place on the all-tournament team and was later named the GLVC Player of the Week. Lindahl helped the Tritons register a combined score of 876, 36 shots behind winner Grand Valley State in the team competition. Freshman Logan Mayo was UMSL’s next highest finisher, tying for 16th with a total of 217, including an eagle on the par-5 first hole during the final round. Sophomore Dani Solavera carded a total of 222. The Tritons conclude their fall schedule today and Tuesday at the Nemacolin Intercollegiate at Mystic Rock Golf Course in Farmington, Pennsylvania.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming
UMSL’s swimming teams combined to go 3-1 against William Jewell and Rockhurst during a triangular meet hosted by William Jewell at Kresge Pool in Liberty, Missouri. The men split, beating the Cardinals 133-71 but falling to the Hawks 104-100. The women, meanwhile, beat William Jewell 106-95 and Rockhurst 115-83. Hendrik Bechtel won both the 400- and 800-meter freestyle races with times of 4 minutes, 7.54 seconds and 8:32.14, respectively. He also second in the 200-meter butterfly at 2:09.89. Conley Savage won the 200-meter backstroke, registering a time of 2:09.1, and he placed third in the 200 freestyle, clocking a time of 1:59.97. Metehan Saruhan won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.72 and was second in the 100 free at 51.95 seconds. The women had six event winners with Justice Beard taking first in both the 400 and 800 freestyle races with times of 4:32.54 and 9:13.35, respectively. Chiara Alberola won the 200 fly at 2:26.13, Kate Nelson won the 100 free in a time of 1:00.13 and Ella Lantz took the top spot in the 200 back with a time of 2:24.87. UMSL also finished first in the 200 free relay with the foursome of Nelson, Madison Bottorff, Audrey Lantz and Romina Itzkovich posting a time of 1:49.78. The Tritons will next race in their home opener against Truman State on Nov. 2 at the Mark Twain Athletic Center.
