Women’s Soccer
The University of Missouri–St. Louis women’s soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 2-0 quarterfinal victory over fourth-seeded Rockhurst on Sunday afternoon in Kansas City. Senior midfielder Kayley Judy scored on a bicycle kick off a pass from Adelaide Green in the 31st minute to give the fifth-seeded Tritons a 1-0 lead. Judy added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute off a feed from Natalie Scott for a 2-0 UMSL advantage. The Tritons’ defense was strong throughout, holding the Hawks without a shot on goal until the final minute of the first half, and goalkeeper Mary Kate Neal made four saves to collect her sixth consecutive shutout and ninth shutout this season. UMSL (13-3-2) advanced to the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament for the third time in the past four years and will take on top-seeded Maryville (15-0-2) on Thursday at Creve Coeur Soccer Park.
Men’s Soccer
UMSL’s season came to an end after a 1-0 loss to 12th-ranked McKendree on Sunday evening in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament at Leemon Field in Lebanon, Illinois. UMSL, seeded sixth, couldn’t get the ball past McKendree goalkeeper Christian Herluf despite outshooting the Bearcats 11-8. Gibson Hunt sailed a shot over the crossbar in the 31st minute, and JT Goldstein had a header miss high two minutes before intermission. Herluf saved quality chances by Roman Ryabchenko and Drew Schenk early in the second half to keep the match scoreless, and McKendree’s Matteo Schubert finally snapped the tie in the 68th minute when he won a race to a lose ball and caught UMSL goalkeeper Austin Reis off his line, shooting into the open net for the evening’s only goal. The Tritons, who made their first postseason appearance since 2021, finished with a record of 7-5-6.
Men’s Cross Country
UMSL posted its highest-ever finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional, placing 14th out of 27 teams on Saturday in the race hosted by Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois. Fifth-year senior Jacob Warner paced the Tritons with a 22nd-place individual finish, clocking a time of 31 minutes, 36.50 seconds on the 10-kilometer course. Toby Middleton was UMSL’s next highest finisher, finishing 33rd with a time of 31:50.99. Benjamin VandenBrink had a time of 32:35.83, good for 70th place. Emmett Johnson, Will Kaempfe, Julio Cruz Jr. and Luke Stevenson rounded out UMSL’s top seven in a field of 190 runners. Lewis’ Evan Horgan was the individual winner with a time of 30:39.46 while Grand Valley State won team championship with a score of 40 points.
Women’s Cross Country
The Tritons finished 27th in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional on Saturday in Romeoville, Illinois. Kayley Heeter was UMSL’s top finisher, placing 148th with a time of 24:38.97 and was followed by Bridget Ragan at 25:52.07. Bella Massaro, Lily Wagemann, Ella Tynan, Melissa White and Zoey Losch rounded out the Tritons’ top seven. Grand Valley State’s Lauren Kiley was the individual winner with a time of 20:57.78, and she led the Lakers to a dominant performance in the team competition, which they won with a total of 20 points.
Volleyball
No. 18 UMSL went 0-2 on a weekend road trip to Quincy and Illinois Springfield, falling to the 20th-ranked Hawks 25-23, 25-20, 16-25, 25-15 on Friday and then 28-26, 21-25, 27-25, 25-22 on Saturday. Quincy outhit the Tritons .326 to .274 in Friday’s match, and UMSL committed 27 attack errors to Illinois Springfield’s 16 on Saturday. Alayna Santel had a team-high 14 kills against the Hawks, and the Tritons also got 13 kills and four blocks from Hannah Copeland. Iyannah Jackson had 18 kills against the Prairie Stars, and Copeland and Santel chipped in 13 each. Caitlin Bishop had 96 assists in the two matches, while Skylar Weaver paced the Tritons with a combined 40 digs. UMSL (17-7, 6-5 GLVC) has now lost five straight away from home, but it will return to the Mark Twain Athletic Center trying to protect a 25-match winning streak as it wraps up its regular season against Southwest Baptist on Friday and Drury on Saturday.
Women’s Basketball
The Tritons opened their season with 78-51 victory over Roosevelt on Friday night but fell to Wisconsin-Parkside 71-62 on Saturday at the Mark Twain Athletic Center. Freshman Katie Hamill led the Tritons in scoring in both games, finishing with a game-high 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting on Friday and scoring 12 points but going 5 for 16 from the field on Saturday. Kate Rolfes, a graduate transfer from Webster, scored 15 points and made 3 of 6 3-pointers against Roosevelt. She helped UMSL go 7 for 15 from beyond the arc in Friday’s victory, the team’s first in a season opener but the Tritons connected on only 6 of 20 3-pointers on Saturday while shooting 36.9% from the field. Returner Morgan Ramthun had 11 points and 11 rebounds in Saturday’s loss. Earlier in the week, UMSL topped Division I Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 60-54 in an exhibition game in Edwardsville, Illinois. Hamill scored 15 points in the victory, and Alex Wolff and Mara Rieder added 11 each. The Tritons (1-1) will take on the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis on Friday at UHSP Gymnasium in their only game of the week.
Men’s Basketball
UMSL went 0-2 to open its season in the JustAGame Crossover event in the Wisconsin Dells, losing to Michigan Tech 72-57 on Friday afternoon and Northern Michigan 77-63 on Saturday night. KC Udolisa had a team-high 17 points in his UMSL debut, after transferring from Kilgore College, to pace the Tritons in Friday’s loss, and Matt Enright chipped in 11 points. UMSL committed 15 turnovers and shot just 8 for 15 from the foul line while watching Michigan Tech connect on 21 of 24 free throws. Northern Michigan shot 9 for 18 from beyond the 3-point arc in Saturday’s loss. Emanuel Prospere II scored a team-high 16 points, Enright had 12 and Janeir Harris added 11 in the loss. UMSL (0-2) will open its home schedule on Tuesday when it plays host to Winona State.
