The University of Missouri–St. Louis’ 25th-ranked men’s golf team finished fourth out of 18 teams at last week’s Findlay Spring Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at Boone’s Trace National Golf Club in Richmond, Kentucky. The Tritons were tied for first after the opening day of competition but fell off the pace with a final round total of 289. They still finished with a combined score of 856 – 12 shots back of team champion Missouri S&T, eight behind runner-up Wayne State and six back of host Findlay. The Miners moved to the top of the team standings after shooting a combined 18 under par in the final round. Leo Baudry was UMSL’s top finisher with a 54-hole score of 210 and was named to the all-tournament team. Trigg Lindahl tied for ninth with a total of 212, and Logan Mayo was 13th at 213. Dani Solavera and Benjamin Berger finished with scores of 222 and 225, respectively. Missouri S&T’s Connor Benjamin was the individual medalist with a total of 198 and won by 10 strokes over runner-up Josh DiCarlo of Wayne State. UMSL is back in action today as it begins the Findianapolis Intercollegiate at Chariot Run Golf Club in Laconia, Indiana.
Baseball
The Tritons struggled last week, losing a nonconference game against Missouri Western on Tuesday and getting swept in a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference series at Lewis on Friday and Saturday. Brady Robertson and LJ Randle each had an RBI single in UMSL’s 6-2 loss to Missouri Western. The Tritons were outscored 38-20 in the four-game series against Lewis, dropping Friday’s doubleheader by 10-4 and 10-2 and losing 6-3 and 12-11 on Saturday. UMSL scored three runs in the eighth inning of Saturday’s second game to force extra innings, but The Flyers won it in the 10th on a bases-loaded single by Will Bruno that scored Mikey Kocen in the 10th inning. Mitch Konczkowski hit a pair of home runs, Dane Stevenson also homered in the loss. Andrew Buescher hit a pair of home runs in Friday’s doubleheader, and the Tritons also got home runs from Cooper Blythe and Braedon Stoakes in the series. But UMSL couldn’t generate enough offense without the long ball. It managed only 16 hits in the first three games of the series. The Tritons (17-15, 7-9 GLVC) will be looking to snap a seven-game losing streak when they head to Drury for a four-game series beginning Friday.
Softball
UMSL lost both ends of its nonconference doubleheader with Central Missouri on Tuesday and went 0-4 in GLVC doubleheaders against Illinois Springfield and No. 22 McKendree over the weekend. The Tritons lost by scores of 7-0 and 8-6 against the Jennies in Warrensburg, Missouri. They couldn’t hold onto a 6-5 lead in sixth inning of the second game. UMSL lost by scores of 3-2 and 6-4 against the Prairie Stars on Friday. It had a 4-0 lead in the second game, but watched Illinois Springfield rally with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh before winning the game with two runs in the ninth inning. McKendree won both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader by scores of 4-1 and 15-2, respectively. Hannah Tomlianovich hit safely in all six games and led the Tritons with 11 hits on the week. Lexi Sherrick had her first six hits of the season last week, including three hits in the second game against Central Missouri. UMSL (11-18, 4-10 GLVC) will try to end a six-game losing streak as it takes to the road for doubleheaders against Lewis on Saturday and Indianapolis on Sunday.
