Volleyball
The No. 11 University of Missouri–St. Louis volleyball team pulled out a five-set victory, 26-24, 19-25, 25-16, 24-26, 15-10, over McKendree on Friday at Melvin Price Convocation Center in Lebanon, Illinois. Sophomore Addison Voorhees registered a career-high 20 kills, and junior Iyannah Jackson added 15, helping the the Tritons hold off a rally from McKendree in the Great Lakes Valley Conference showdown. UMSL used a 6-1 run to gain the upper hand in the final set after dropping the fourth set against the Bearcats (3-10, 1-2 GLVC), and it closed the match with a 6-3 surge. The Tritons won despite hitting only .160 with 33 attack errors. Caitlin Bishop registered 57 assists, and Skylar Weaver had a career-high 27 digs to lead a strong defensive effort. McKendree only hit .183. UMSL (11-2, 2-1 GLVC) will return home riding a two-match winning streak and will take on Lewis on Friday and Indianapolis on Saturday.
Men’s Golf
The Tritons had another record-setting week, scoring an UMSL-best 273 in the second round of the Midwest Regional Preview and using that to propel them to a second-place finish with a score of 864 in the 17-team field at St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Missouri. Freshmen Logan Mayo and Trigg Lindahl carded scores of 68 and 64, respectively, in the record-setting second round, and they went on to finish sixth and seventh, respectively, in the tournament. Mayo posted a combined score of 213, one better than Lindahl. Sophomore Dani Solavera tied for 11th at 217, and sophomore Benjamin Berger tied for 19th with a total of 220. Missouri S&T’s Isaac To was the individual medalist with a scored of 209. Ferris State won the team title with a score of 857. UMSL will play in next week’s Doc Spragg Invitational at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.
Women’s Golf
UMSL placed second in the 18-team Beall Fall Classic at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio. The Tritons posted a combined score of 882 in the 54-hole tournament, finishing 12 shots behind tournament host Findlay. UMSL’s score was the second-best 54-hole total in school history. Senior Juliette Lecomte claimed a place on the all-tournament team by finishing fourth individually with a total of 217 – the ninth-best score in school history. Junior Wilma Zanderau tied for ninth with a score of 220, and freshman Emmy Wahl took 12th with a score of 221. Lynn’s Amelia Ruiz claimed medalist honors with a score of 214. The Tritons are competing in this week’s National Preview at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder Creek, Nevada.
Men’s Soccer
UMSL lost to visiting Maryville 1-0 Friday night at Don Dallas Field in its lone match of the week. Lukas Molander delivered the match’s only goal when he scored in the 28th minute with assists from Sebastian Weitlaner and Carl Norby. The Tritons outshot the Saints 9-6, including three shots by Linus Saewe, but couldn’t get the equalizer. UMSL (3-3-3, 1-2-3 GLVC) will look to bounce back when it travels to Illinois Springfield on Friday and McKendree on Sunday.
Women’s Soccer
The Tritons dropped their lone match of the week against No. 20 Maryville 3-0 on Friday at Don Dallas Field. The Saints grabbed the lead in the 27th minute on a goal by Ulrika Bredin and added tallies by Paige Barry in the 43rd minute and Nika Vemdal in the 78th to open up a 3-0 lead. UMSL’s best chance to get on the board came in the 84th minute when Jada Holloman sliced through the Maryville defense but shot right at goalkeeper Agnes Vilen. The Saints outshot UMSL 19-9, and Mary Kate Neal made seven saves, including five in the second half for the Tritons. UMSL (4-3-2, 1-3-2 GLVC) visits Illinois Springfield on Friday and McKendree on Sunday.
Women’s Tennis
UMSL picked up nine wins across singles and doubles competition at this week’s SIUE Invitational in Edwardsville, Illinois. Freshman Morgan Lint recorded two of the victories, topping William Woods’ Zara Littlejohn 6-0, 6-0 and SIUE’s Paige Duncan 6-1, 6-3. Lint also teamed with Anna Favaron to go 1-1 in doubles matches with a victory over William Woods’ Mireria Simon Sanchez and Littlejohn 6-3. Favaron was one of three UMSL players – along with Hannah Tse and Guliana Cunza – to go 1-1 in singles competition. Tse and Aleksandra Lopez also went 2-0 in doubles competition. The Tritons will finish their fall schedule on Saturday when it plays host to Missouri Valley at the UMSL Tennis Courts.
Men’s Tennis
The Tritons topped Missouri Baptist 4-3 Friday to earn their first victory of the season. UMSL swept the doubles matches at Christian Brothers College’s Cadet Park with Marcos Navas and Percy Siercke topping Strahinja Radanovic and Filip Petrovic 6-2 at No. 1, Tanin Ramnath and Bauty Rooney with the No. 2 match 6-1 over Lucas Kzam and Nicolas Sanchez, and Joan Garros and Jose Yañez topping Albert Pros Cieker and Arkhip Tokmakov 7-6 (10-8) at No. 3. Ramnath and Siercke also won their singles matches, with Ramnath beating Takmakov 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 and Siercke beating Kzam 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3, as UMSL took a 3-1 lead. Garros providing the clinching point when he won the No. 5 singles match 6-2, 6-1 over Cieker. The Tritons (1-1) will wrap up their fall schedule on Saturday against Missouri Valley at the UMSL Tennis Courts.
Men’s and Women’s Swimming
UMSL’s swimming teams opened their 2024-25 season on Friday afternoon in a dual meet against Saint Louis University at the Simon Recreation Center. The Tritons lost the women’s dual 133-81 and the men’s dual 122-95 but had 11 event winners. Sophomore Justice Beard won both the 1,000-yard and 500-yard freestyle races, posting times of 10 minutes, 28.64 seconds and 5:09.27, respectively. Freshman Chiara Alberola also took first in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 58.66 seconds, senior Kate Nelson won the 100 freestyle in 53.80, and the relay team of Madison Bottorff, Nelson, Romina Itzkovich and Ella Lantz won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:39.14. On the men’s side, fifth-year senior Conley Savage and sophomore Hendrik Bechtel each won two events. Savage won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.62 and the 100 butterfly in 51.17, while Bechtel won both the 1,000 and 500 freestyle races in 9:44.31 and 4:42.25, respectively. Freshman Metehan Saruhan was the top finisher in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.66, and senior Ryan Conner won the 100-yard backstroke in 51.94. UMSL next competes in a triangular with William Jewell and Rockhurst on Oct. 18 in Liberty, Missouri.
