Lexi Whalen, a freshman biology major and Pierre Laclede Honors College student at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, prepares to plant a tree in Virginia A. Bira Park in Vinita Park, Missouri. Whalen joined 13 other Honors College students including Makenzie Strickler, Reese Rich and Miles Benton (in background), to plant trees with Beyond Housing, the Missouri Department of Conservation and other community groups on Oct. 10.

The groups planted approximately 20 trees. Honors College students have a variety of opportunities to volunteer in the community through their Honors Day of Service. The programs are designed to encourage students to become involved with UMSL and the community.
