Nearly 500 people attended Alumni Weekend on Friday and Saturday at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.
Frank Cusumano, BA speech communication 1984, was the guest auctioneer Friday night at the Red and Gold Bash. As a student, Cusumano worked at The Current, UMSL’s student newspaper, and interned at KSDK (Channel 5), where he’s a sports reporter and co-host of “Sports Plus.”
“Coming here was one of the three or four best decisions of my life,” he told fellow alumni at the event. “I give a ringing endorsement to any kid considering UMSL.”
Alumni at the bash enjoyed food prepared by alumni chefs, prizes, a live band and dancing.
On Saturday morning, UMSL Chancellor Tom George held a brunch at his residence for out-of-town alumni and their guests. Alumni from Colorado, California and Kentucky attended. Many returned to campus for the first time in more than 20 years.
The Tritons Baseball Game Tailgate was held Saturday afternoon before the UMSL Tritons took the field for a doubleheader against Drury University (of Springfield, Mo.). The tailgate party included face painting and games for children, hot dogs and refreshments.
A total of 13 former UMSL baseball players took the field to wish the current players good luck, and Arnold Copeland, the first baseball coach at UMSL and a member of the university’s Sports Hall of Fame, threw out the first pitch. The festive atmosphere didn’t help the Tritons, who lost the first game 2-7 and the second game 0-7.
Activities on Saturday also included campus tours and informational classes on a range of topics, including government policy, urban ecology and social networking. Faculty members were on hand to chat with alumni, and some colleges held receptions and award ceremonies.
The evening culminated with an alumni reception and a performance that was part of the Greater St. Louis Jazz Festival at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center.
