Carole Basile is the new dean of the College of Education at UMSL.

Carole Basile has been named dean of the College of Education at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

Basile, who will begin the position Aug. 1, currently serves as professor of education and chair of the Advanced Urban Education program at the University of Colorado Denver.

“Education today is a complex field and often difficult to navigate. However, with vision, a collaborative spirit and strong community partnerships we can achieve success,” Basile said. “I believe the UMSL College of Education’s faculty and staff are poised as educational advocates who believe in educational access for every child; as scholars and leaders that can and will continue to inform practice; and as mentors who inspire educators, both undergraduates and graduates, to challenge the status quo with innovation and creativity. It is truly my honor to provide leadership, experience and vision to the college and look forward to many successful partnerships and long-lasting friendships.”

She is co-director of the Rocky Mountain Middle School Math and Science Partnership, a National Science Foundation grant-funded project geared toward increasing student achievement in grades six through eight. Basile has served as associate dean of teacher education and professional learning and director of  the Center for Applied Math and Science for Innovation and Competitiveness at UC Denver. Prior to that, she held a faculty position at the University of Houston.

UMSL Provost Glen Cope said Basile will be a great asset to the College of Education.

“Carole Basile brings to UMSL great experience from another urban college of education,” Cope said. “Her leadership experience in working with schools and community leaders will complement the work of our faculty and staff, and benefit our students. We are very pleased she will join us as dean.”

Basile has published numerous articles and book chapters in the areas of math and science teaching, professional development of teachers and elementary education.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in human development and a master’s degree in counseling education from Pennsylvania State University in University Park. She earned her doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Houston.

Kathleen Haywood, associate dean of graduate education at UMSL, has served as interim dean of the college since last September when longtime dean Charles Schmitz retired. Schmitz, who became dean of the College of Education in 1996, is credited with bringing technology, innovation and funding to the college.

The College of Education at UMSL is one of only 600 nationwide accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and is fully accredited by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The college prepares more teachers for the classroom than any other institution in Missouri. It offers 21 academic programs and is home to the E. Desmond Lee Technology and Learning Center, where students garner skills and understanding to effectively use technology in the classroom. Additionally, the newly opened Math Science Education Central provides hands-on and innovative  training for math and science educators.
