August 2021 One Canvas Launches

From a note that went out via email from Missouri Online | Office of eLearning <MissouriOnline@umsystem.edu>

One Canvas launch

All universities and instructors will begin offering courses in the new One Canvas platform beginning Fall 2021. Right now, all users log into the system in the same way. This move streamlines support and lowers costs, allowing Missouri Online | Office of eLearning to better respond to the needs of faculty, staff and students. The One Canvas Migration FAQ helps answer questions you may have about this endeavor.

The last day individual campus instances of Canvas will be available is Aug. 10. After that date, individual campus sites will automatically redirect to One Canvas. Before then, please log into One Campus directly at umsystem.instructure.com to ensure your teaching and learning content is ready to go.

The great news is that using the new version of Canvas feels just like the Canvas you remember. We’re here to help you with any additional questions —reach out to us at Canvas@umsystem.edu.

Panopto videos in One Canvas

Currently, when instructors log into One Canvas, their Panopto videos from their campus instances will not be available. During the week of Aug. 10, all videos from each campus instance will be migrated to One Panopto and will be available in One Canvas. While we acknowledge this is a tight timeline, it is necessary to wait until the end of the Summer session to migrate the videos. If you would like to embed your videos in your Canvas site before Aug. 10, we have instructions available on Teaching Tools.

If you would like to learn more about Panopto, check out our upcoming training sessions.

Important notes about One Canvas

Any participants who should be in your One Canvas course must be listed in your campus instance of Peoplesoft and will be automatically added to your course in One Canvas. This includes students, TAs, teachers, etc. It can take 24 to 48 hours from the time they are added to your Peoplesoft instance, so please check and contact your campus registrar if your Canvas user list is not accurate.
If you are combining multiple sections into a Canvas site: Utilize the Canvas Request System (CRS) to combine your course sections into Canvas sites. It is essential you complete this task before your course starts or student work can potentially be lost. During the business day, these requests will be processed within three hours.
If you have a course in your campus instance of Canvas that ends after Aug. 11, please reach out to Missouri Online | eLearning at Canvas@umsystem.edu to schedule support.
If you are working on courses for Fall, all edits should be made in One Canvas and not in your campus instance of Canvas. Summer courses will be migrated after the semester is over.

SmarterProctoring

In mid-May, we adopted SmarterProctoring for automated proctoring, shortly before our partnership with Proctorio ended June 1. Please inform everyone teaching a course this fall that Proctorio is no longer available ― including graduate teaching assistants and adjunct faculty members.

SmarterProctoring gives students more choices and increases flexibility for instructors, allowing them to offer seamless online proctoring options. Register for a virtual training session to learn more.

You can also contact us at TeachingTools@umsystem.edu for direct assistance and support in implementing SmarterProctoring in your course.

Online teaching certification seminar

Faculty and instructors are encouraged to register for the Online Teaching Certification Seminar. The Teaching Certification Seminar is designed to help faculty deliver a high quality learning experience in every online course. The August session has begun, but there are openings for our remaining 2021 workshops.

Registration closes at noon on the Monday before each session starts.

Remaining 2021 dates:

Session 8: Sept. 13 to Oct. 25
Session 9: Sept. 27 to Nov. 8
Session 10: Oct. 4 to Nov. 15

Faculty resources coming soon

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new faculty-focused website, teaching.missouri.edu, coming at the end of August 2021. The new site will be a centralized resource where faculty on all four campuses can find valuable information about online teaching and learning workshops, professional development opportunities and other Missouri Online faculty services.

With the launch of our new faculty website, we will retire Keep Learning and migrate all content to the new site. Our new support email address will be TeachingOnline@umsystem.edu.
