“Post 3/11 Japan and Contemporary Media,” a lecture about Japanese culture and the idea that we can learn about social change by considering the dynamics of popular culture, will be held at 5 p.m. on July 13 in the Student Government Chamber in the Millennium Student Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

Ian Condry, associate professor of comparative media studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, will discuss some of the lessons learned about contemporary Japan from social media, especially in the aftermath of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis (“triple disaster”) that occurred in March.

The lecture is sponsored by the Northeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies Distinguished Speaker Program with support from the Japan America Student Association and Center for International Studies at UMSL; the Webster University Center for International Education; and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Washington University in St. Louis.
