The Arianna String Quartet, UMSL's resident quartet, is (from left) David Gillham, Kurt Baldwin, Joanna Mendoza and John McGrosso. They'll perform "Tribute" on Sept. 9 at the Touhill.

The Arianna String Quartet, the resident quartet at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, will commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 with their concert “Tribute.” The performance will begin at 8 p.m. Sept. 9 in the E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center.

The quartet will perform powerful and uplifting pieces that illuminate the human spirit, expression and emotion, including E-flat Major, Op. 74 by Ludwig Van Beethoven, Second String Quartet “In Memory” by Joan Tower and Piano Quartet in C minor, Op. 60 by Johannes Brahms.

Beethoven’s uplifting “Harp” quartet in E-flat Major, Op.74, is a work infused with intimacy and optimism that illuminates the indomitable power of the human spirit. Tower’s stirring “In Memory” captures an affecting array of emotions following the events of 9/11. Acclaimed pianist Alla Voskoboynikova, coordinator of piano studie at UMSL, will join the quartet in the performance of Brahms’s eloquent Piano Quartet in C minor, Op.60, a work known for its rhapsodic beauty and ruminative expression.

This internationally acclaimed Arianna String Quartet – violinists John McGrosso and David Gillham, violist Joanna Mendoza and cellist Kurt Baldwin – has been hailed as one of the cultural gems of the St. Louis region by Sarah Bryan Miller of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. In addition to their concert series in St. Louis at the Touhill, the Arianna Quartet routinely performs throughout the United States.

Tickets for “Tribute” are $23. They are on sale now at the Touhill Performing Arts Center Ticket Office; online at touhill.org or by phone at 314-516-4949.

The Touhill’s ticket office is located at 1 University Blvd. in St. Louis County (63121).
