UMSL philosophy students (l to r) Michael Neal, Dean Obermark, John Camacho and Nick Curry are part of a team putting together a monthly discussion series called "The Big Question." The first one, "Are You in the Matrix?", is set for 12:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in Century Room C at the Millennium Student Center.

Can you trust your senses? How do you know that some evil alien hasn’t stuck a wire into your brain and placed you into a vat of warm goo? That’s the first big question. There will be others.

A team of philosophy majors and graduate students at the University of Missouri–St. Louis has come up with a series called “The Big Question” for further discussion. The sessions are open to the public and involve a free lunch for participants.

The first 2011 BQ, “Are You in the Matrix?”, will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in Century Room C at the Millennium Student Center on UMSL’s North Campus.

Even if you didn’t see the 1999 sci-fi thriller or its sequels, the budding philosophers promise a lively, exciting and informal conversation. Everyone will be heard and respected.
