A talented music student at the University of Missouri–St. Louis will perform two piano concerts at the Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center.
Pianist Daniel Kuehler, winner of the 2011 UMSL Concerto Competition, will play a junior recital at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 29 in the E. Desmond and Mary Ann Lee Theater at the Touhill. The second half of Kuehler’s program will feature all the movements of Sergei Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18.
Kuehler’s “reward” for winning the concerto competition was a solo performance in the spring. He’ll collect his prize during a performance on March 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lee Theater at the Touhill. He’ll be featured on the piano during the University Orchestra’s spring 2012 concert.
“UMSL has an excellent music department and I am very honored to have been chosen the winner,” said Kuehler. “There is so much great talent in our music department.”
He said the level of competition at the concerto competition was very high.
“I remember sitting in the audience listening to my friends and colleagues perform and thinking to myself, ‘How can the judges possibly pick a winner?’ Everyone brought their A-game that day.”
Kuehler is a student of Alla Voskoboynikova, director of keyboard studies at UMSL. Both of Kuehler’s performances are free and open to the public, and are sponsored by the Department of Music at UMSL.
