Syn-Aulois: Rembetika to Modern

Description: The Boston-based ensemble Syn-Aulois performs a wide range of twentieth century Greek art music, rembetika, and contemporary popular music. The name Syn-Aulois (pronounced “Sin-Avlis”) comes from the ancient Greek words “syn” (together) and the plural form of the ancient flute or “aulos,” and references the modern Greek word for “concert”: “synaulia,” a coming together of musical voices. The three musicians who make up the group come from a rich variety of musical backgrounds, including jazz, classical music, avant-garde, rock, and Latin music, as well as various styles of folkloric and urban Greek music, and perform on bouzouki, violin, guitar, piano, accordion, percussion, and of course the extraordinary voice of Panayota Haloulakou. Lisa Ling: “Open Heart, Open Mind”

Description: Ling is the co-executive producer and host of “Our America” on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) and was the field correspondent for The Oprah Show. She is also a contributor to ABC News’ “Nightline.” She was the first female host of National Geographic’s “Explorer” series, where she investigated the deadly MS-13 gang, went undercover inside North Korea and explored the drug war in South America. Ling got her start in journalism as a correspondent for Channel One News, where she covered the civil war in Afghanistan at 21 years of age. She later went on to become a co-host of ABC Daytime’s hit show, “The View,” which won its first daytime Emmy during her time at the show. She is the co-author of “Somewhere Inside: One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and the Other’s Fight to Bring Her Home,” which she wrote with her sister, Laura. Language Immersion – Japan

Description: This course will immerse students in Japanese culture and language. Topics/activities will include taiko drumming, martial arts, calligraphy, paper crafts, preparation of an authentic Japanese meal, viewing and discussing Japanese television and film, using manga in language learning, and taking part in confidence-building activities. Description: Moliere’s classic farce comes to life in a bold, new production at UMSL’s Touhill Performing Arts Center. Religious hypocrite Tartuffe has wormed his way into the once ordered household and vulnerable heart of substantial merchant Orgon. Under the guise of piety, he looks set to succeed in driving away the son, marrying the daughter, seducing the wife, imprisoning Orgon and leaving the family destitute. Railed against as a sacrilegious outrage by the church, the play was banned from public performance by Louis XIV in 1664. Tickets are $5 with student ID and $10 general public
