Mathematicians from throughout the region will gather April 12-14 at the University of Missouri–St. Louis for a pair of major math events. The Deparment of Mathematics and Computer Science at UMSL will host the spring meeting of the Missouri Section of the Mathematical Association of America on April 13 and 14. MAA Vice President Francis Su and David Wright, chairman of the Department of Mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis, will be the keynote speakers at the meeting.

In addition, the Missouri Collegiate Mathematics Competition will be conducted April 12 and 13 at UMSL.

Wright will speak on the connection between mathematics and music. He has a PhD in mathematics from Columbia University in New York. Wright also is a musician, arranging and composing a cappella music in jazz, blues, gospel, country, doo-wop and contemporary.

Su is a professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif., and earned his PhD in mathematics from Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. His research is in geometric combinatorics and applications to the social sciences, and he has co-authored more than a dozen papers with undergraduates. Su’s presentation is titled “Teaching Research: Encouraging Discoveries.”

Richard Delaware, associate teaching professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, from which he also earned his PhD, will serve as the meeting’s banquet speaker. In 2011, he won the UMKC Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and had previously won the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching. Delaware will present an autobiographical talk titled “My Occasionally Intentional, but Repeatedly Distracted Path to a Mathematical Life.”

Additionally, the Conference will feature 20-minute presentations given by those who have contributed papers. Those interested in presenting may submit a contributed paper by April 6. Presenters of accepted papers are expected to register for the conference and will give 20-minute presentations.

Vendors interested in registering a booth at the conference may do so for a $35 fee. For details regarding booth setup and other questions, please call 314-516-5972.
