Recidivism Reduction Strategies in Probation Supervision

Description: The Risk-Need-Responsivity program has fostered an emphasis on responding to those factors that are changeable in a person. Two questions are seldom answered: What is our empirical knowledge about how can offenders change? and What role can probation officers play in this change process? This talk will review the findings used in the RNR Simulation Tool of offender outcomes, as well as other studies on offender outcomes. A major emphasis will be to translate the findings for relevance for the field of probation supervision. Emphasis will be on decision rules for assigning offenders of varying risk-need profiles to appropriate treatment and controls to obtain better offender outcomes. Presented by Faye S. Taxman, a university professor in the Criminology, Law and Society Department and director of the Advancing Correctional Excellence Center at George Mason University.

Description: This 2000 Pulitzer Prize-nominated play, presented by the UMSL Department of Theatre, Dance & Media Studies, is a modern day re-interpretation of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter.” Penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, we follow the story of Hester and her five fatherless children. Parks uses themes from Hawthorne’s text to bring a modern story of poverty and oppression to life. This presentation is for mature audiences. Tickets are $5 for students with school ID and $10 for the general public.

Description: Variety Children’s Theatre is where the St. Louis performing arts community comes together with Variety kids to create an unforgettable theater experience. From auditions to production, Variety Children’s Theatre allows children of all abilities learn theater skills from seasoned professionals, onstage and backstage. This inclusive setting offers an unmatched opportunity to develop important relationships, skills sets and appreciation of the overall workings of a live musical theater program. This year’s production of “Annie” will feature a diverse 80-member cast, including more than 24 Variety kids. A professional orchestra and Tony-nominated director Lara Teeter are joining together to produce the Broadway classic, “Annie.” But fans do not have to fly to New York City and fight the clogged Manhattan streets to see the beloved musical. Discount student and faculty/staff tickets available, but quantities are limited.
