As Devon Brandon entered the Millennium Student Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis Thursday morning she was greeted by the smiling faces of fellow UMSL students dressed in crisp green aprons and hocking newspapers. It was part of an annual St. Louis tradition known as Old Newsboys Day that benefits more than 250 local charities.

“Oh I love supporting Old Newsboys Day,” said Brandon, a UMSL biology major, as she pulled change from her bag to give to Mengyun Liu, a UMSL marketing student and OND volunteer. “It’s a wonderful charity, and I think it’s great that they are doing this.”

UMSL College of Business Administration students, who have taken part in the event for years, descended on Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, the Millennium Student Center at UMSL and St. Louis Community College at Wildwood to sell the special print edition of the newspapers. The annual event is held the Thursday before Thanksgiving.

This year, UMSL Marketing Club spearheaded the university’s involvement, which produced 40 UMSL volunteers and raised more than $1,634.

“I think it’s really important for us to be a part of Old Newsboys Day,” said Brittany Basler, UMSL marketing and accounting major and president of the Marketing Club. “It’s a great cause, it gives back to the community and it helps children in need.”
