Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
The St. Louis region has experienced an array of challenges since the August 9 death of Michael Brown. I commend our students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends on how they have expressed their feelings and acted in a civil, peaceful and productive manner. The University of Missouri–St. Louis has earned a well-deserved reputation as a place where differences can be discussed and actions for positive change originate and flourish.
There have been many questions in recent days about how UMSL will respond when the St. Louis County grand jury renders its findings. I understand your concerns.
There may be those with strong opinions who want to exercise their free speech rights in a manner that is peaceful and civil. Our campus can be a forum for such activities and will be as accommodating as possible.
I also want you to know that UMSL has an Emergency Operations Plan that is regularly enhanced and updated by an outstanding team represented by academic affairs, student affairs, information technology, facilities, communications and campus police. Team members have discussed contingencies and cooperation with agencies and organizations throughout the region. We have many options available to us for an appropriate response for threats to people or property. I have approved the necessary resources to implement any of these activities.
Our goal is to ensure your safety and to react and respond in an appropriate manner. We will communicate to campus constituencies as conditions warrant. With your help, I am sure that the UMSL community will continue to be a reasoned voice leading the region forward.
Sincerely,
Tom George
