University of Missouri–St. Louis freshman Alberto Maza-Martin has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in the sport of men’s tennis.
Maza-Martin, a business administration major, won all six matches played last week, going 3-0 in both singles and doubles. UMSL started the week on March 23 with a 6-3 loss at No. 27 ranked Southern Indiana, and the rookie was the only Triton to earn both a singles and doubles victory. He started with a 9-7 win with Dario Vidaurre – the duo’s fifth straight – against Roman Laga and Anthony Van Rompay at No. 2, which was then followed by a come-from-behind, three-set battle against Van Rompay at #3 by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Four days later on March 27, UMSL shutout Truman State 9-0, as Maza-Martin took the No. 2 doubles win with Vidaurre, 8-3, before earning the 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Ryan Bunselmeyer. In the UMSL Tritons’ final match of the week on March 28, Maza-Martin topped Ethan Arns of Quincy 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 3 spot after beating Patrick Kuhle and Ryan McMillan at #2 doubles, 8-3, with Vidaurre.
This is the first career weekly honor for the Madrid native and second UMSL win in the last three weeks, as Nils Mueggenburg won the honor March 17.
