UMSL captured the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Championship, rolling through Illinois Springfield, Rockhurst, McKendree and Truman State en route to the program’s fourth conference tournament title in the past five seasons. Sophomore Carly Kingery pitched the Tritons to a 5-0 victory over Truman State in Sunday’s final, backed by a solo home run from senior Erin Walker and a seventh-inning grand slam by redshirt freshman Morgan Hill. UMSL (39-13) has won 13 of its past 14 games and secured the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Division II Championship. The Tritons will host a four-team sub-regional with fourth-seeded Wayne State, fifth-seeded Truman State and eighth-seeded Kentucky Wesleyan. They open against Kentucky Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at UMSL Softball Field. The winner of the UMSL sub-regional will advance to play the winner of this weekend’s sub-regional at Southern Indiana in a Super Regional May 18-19.

The Tritons’ season came to an end Sunday but not before they snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over Drury on a walk-off home run from junior Jacob Monti in the final game of a doubleheader on Sunday. Senior Jacob Renfrow won his team-best sixth game of the season with a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out two in his final collegiate outing. He was one of 11 seniors honored before Sunday’s doubleheader on Senior Day. Also receiving recognition were Jake Beckwith, Tanner Hudson, Damin Smith, Nick Ulrey, Jake Daily, Jordan Tharp, Jon Shanker, Kevin Smith, Andrew Bicklein and Zach Lindsay. UMSL finished the season 16-30 (10-18 GLVC).
