UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

Junior guard Arielle Jackson (2) averaged 19 points and 4.5 assists last week as the women’s basketball team knocked off Rockhurst and Bellarmine.

Women’s Basketball
UMSL stretched its winning streak to five games last week with victories over Rockhurst (78-68) and Bellarmine (72-61). Junior Arielle Jackson averaged 19 points and 4.5 assists in the Tritons’ victories and netted 18 of 22 free throws, while senior Jordan Fletcher followed with 14 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. UMSL (12-5, 6-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference) travels north this weekend to Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

Men’s Basketball
The Tritons routed Rockhurst 79-49 last Thursday but fell to fifth-ranked Bellarmine 78-56 on Saturday. Junior Johnathan Matthews averaged 14.5 points while making 5 of 9 three-pointers, and senior D.J. White added 10 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. UMSL (9-10, 4-6 GLVC) is at Lewis on Thursday and at Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming
UMSL got a final tuneup before next weekend’s GLVC Championships on Saturday in a triangular against NCAA Division I foes Saint Louis University and Eastern Illinois. The men won five events, including three from sophomore Gabo Jimenez in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 freestyle and the 200 medley relay. The women earned four second-place finishes, including two by sophomore Aga Blocka in the 100 and 200 freestyle races and another in the 200 freestyle relay. The GLVC Championships will be held Feb. 7-10 in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
