Gallery 210 at the University of Missouri–St. Louis will showcase Paul Artspace with an exhibition featuring selected work by the more than 80 international, national, regional and local artists who have held residencies there over the past five years.
Assistant Teaching Professor Mike Behle and alumna Jessi Cerutti, who chairs the board at Paul Artspace, are curating the exhibition, titled simply, “Paul Artspace: 5 Years.” It will open Saturday with a panel discussion set for 4 p.m. and a reception to follow from 5 to 7 p.m.
The exhibition will remain on display until Dec. 1 and will be complimented by a special curatorial project, Urban Bridge, curated by Emma Vidal of HATSH. Urban Bridge is designed to bring together French artists from HATSH and St. Louis artists on the common theme of urban landscape.
“Paul Art has become a really central part of the St. Louis art scene through its advocacy of bringing in artists from all over the world as well as supporting local artists,” said Gallery 210 Director Terry Suhre. “We’re fortunate to be able to collaborate with them on this special long-term project.”
Paul Artspace is a residency program based in St. Louis that offers living and studio space for local, national, and international artists, writers and curators. By providing time and space, Paul Artspace promotes thoughtful discourse and artistic exchanges within the greater cultural community.
It is located on a beautiful and serene six acres in north St. Louis County. Since opening in July 2013, more than 80 artists, writers and curators in various stages of their careers have taken up residence there. Selected applicants are provided housing and studio space for a period of one to three months. Residents enjoy a private room, private studio space, communal kitchen and bath, and access to the tool room, wood shop, library and etching press. The facilities at Paul Artspace permit for up to three individuals to work and live on the property, and this scheduling occurs on a rolling basis.
Suhre said the upcoming exhibition will feature work from artists from New York to Seattle in the United States and as far away as Brazil, Belgium, France and Ireland. They include: Hélène Baril, Lauren Cardenas, Carl Giffney, Carrie Gillen, Wendy Huynh, Shabez Jamal, Anna Kohlweis, Andreas Kindler von Knobloch, Sandra Lapage, Nate Larson, Jemila MacEwan, Chloe Mossessian, Tuan Nguyen, Carlos Pileggi, Lucas Ribeyron, Carlie Trosclair, Robin Wen, Julia Wenz, Ryan Woodring, Ellen Xu and Albert “Kuo” Yowshien.
“What we’re going to be seeing here is a very progressive approach to art making by artists who are probably going to be emerging onto the national scene in just a very short time,” Suhre said.
This exhibition is made possible through the generous support of the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency, and the UMSL School of Fine and Performing Arts.
There will be ongoing special events around the exhibit throughout the semester at Gallery 210. Check back at the gallery’s website for more information.
