UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

The men's basketball team finished off a four-game conference road swing by coming back to beat Truman State and Quincy, improving its record to 14-4 on the season.

UMSL rallied for comeback wins against GLVC opponents Truman State and Quincy last week. Johnathan Matthews averaged 16.5 points and 3.0 assists in the two victories.

Men’s Basketball
UMSL went 2-0 on the road in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, posting two come-from-behind victories. The Tritons rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit at Truman State in a 61-58 victory on Thursday and came back from 10 down at Quincy on Saturday in an 83-74 win. Senior Johnathan Matthews averaged 16.5 points and 3.0 assists, while sophomore Anthony Hughes added 10.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. UMSL (14-4, 5-3 GLVC) returns home on Saturday to face Maryville.

Women’s Basketball
The Tritons came up short in their upset bid Thursday at No. 25 Truman State, losing 66-61, and they also lost 77-65 on Saturday at Quincy. Senior Kaitlynn Henning averaged 16 points, four rebounds and two assists, while redshirt junior Laura Szorenyi added 11 points per contest in her first two starts of the year. Sophomore Alex LaPorta averaged 12.5 rebounds and pulled down 17 at Truman State. UMSL (8-9, 2-6 GLVC) is home on Saturday, taking on Maryville.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming
The men’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Gabo Jimenez, Aiden Clark, Andrew Noltkamper and Radoslaw Chupka swam to a first-place finish as the Tritons competed in a triangular meet against McKendree and William Jewell on Friday and Saturday. Additionally, the men’s swimming team earned seven runner-up finishes, while the women’s team had four runner-up finishes. UMSL returns to the pool on Saturday at Bellarmine in its final tune-up before the GLVC Championships.
