UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

The men's and women's basketball teams both secured narrow victories over crosstown rival Maryville, with the women overcoming a 16-point deficit.
UMSL Tritons Weekly Rewind – 01.28.19

Laura Szorenyi scored a season-high 18 points to help UMSL overcome a 16-point, first-quarter deficit and beat conference opponent Maryville 61-59 Saturday at the Mark Twain Athletic Center.

Women’s Basketball
UMSL overcame a slow start en route to picking up a 61-59 victory over Maryville on Saturday. The Tritons trailed by 16 at the end of the first quarter but chipped away at the lead and outscored their guests 41-31 in the second half. Redshirt junior Laura Szorenyi scored a season-high 18 points. UMSL (9-9, 3-6 Great Lakes Valley Conference) will play host to Rockhurst this Thursday and William Jewell on Saturday.

Men’s Basketball
The Tritons fended off Maryville on Saturday for a 70-64 home victory. Senior Johnathan Matthews finished with 14 points, which included netting all six of his free throws in the final 32 seconds. Senior Eric Dust led UMSL with 16 points, 14 of those coming in the opening half. The Tritons improved to 15-4 overall for just the fourth time in program history and the first time since the 1990-91 season. UMSL (15-4, 6-3 GLVC) hosts Rockhurst this Thursday and William Jewell on Saturday.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming
UMSL competed against Bellarmine and Maryville on Saturday in a final tune-up before next weekend’s GLVC Championships. The Tritons had three first-place finishes: the men’s and women’s 400-yard freestyle relay teams and Sergio Santisteban in the 500-yard freestyle. Both the men and women defeated Maryville and lost to Bellarmine.
