UMSL Tritons weekly rewind

The softball team continued its hot streak with a pair of two-game sweeps, including one over defending national champion Southern Indiana.
UMSL Tritons Weekly Rewind – 03.25.19

Senior Chelsea Martinez logged a .615 batting average with two home runs and six RBI as UMSL swept four games from Bellarmine and defending NCAA Division II national champion Southern Indiana last week.

Softball
UMSL went 4-0 with sweeps of defending NCAA Division II national champion Southern Indiana and Bellarmine. Senior Chelsea Martinez batted .615 and tallied eight hits, including a double and two home runs, while adding six RBI and five runs scored in the four games. Junior Andee Tiffee posted a 2-0 mark in the circle with a 1.50 ERA and struck out 14. The Tritons (16-14, 5-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference) are at Illinois Springfield on Saturday and McKendree on Sunday in a pair of GLVC doubleheaders.

Baseball
UMSL lost a doubleheader to McKendree before getting swept by No. 10 Quincy in a three-game league series. Freshman Mitchel Becher had five hits, three RBI and two runs scored, while junior Andrew Hayden and sophomore Josh Shoemaker finished with four hits each. The Tritons (4-18, 3-8 GLVC) play at McKendree on Tuesday before a three-game series at Indianapolis this weekend.

Men’s Tennis
UMSL ran its win streak to five matches with victories over Lindenwood (6-1) and Maryville (5-2) in the GLVC opener. Sophomore Karl Heinrichs went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles. The 46th-ranked Tritons (8-3, 1-0 GLVC) will play three road matches this week, traveling to Southern Indiana on Wednesday, No. 37 Illinois Springfield on Friday and No. 23 Drury on Saturday.

Women’s Tennis
No. 48 UMSL swept Lindenwood 6-0 last Thursday before a 5-2 setback at Maryville on Saturday in the GLVC opener. Freshman Odette Beagrie and sophomore Leticia Lunge each posted a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles. The Tritons (6-3, 0-1 GLVC) will host Bellarmine on Wednesday before traveling to No. 43 Illinois Springfield on Friday and No. 18 Drury on Saturday.

Men’s Golf
UMSL tied for runner-up honors at the Broncho Invitational, hosted by Central Oklahoma, last Monday and Tuesday. The No. 18 Tritons entered the final round in fifth place before their surge up the standings to finish with a team score of 872 (287-289-296) . Freshman Joel Sylven recorded his fourth top-five finish of the year by tying for second individually, tallying a 210 (73-70-67). UMSL is at the Argonaut Invitational next Monday and Tuesday in Pensacola, Florida.

Women’s Golf
The Tritons recorded an eighth-place finish at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, hosted by Tennessee Tech, last Sunday through Tuesday. The 12-team field consisted of nine NCAA Division I and three NCAA DII programs. UMSL finished with a team score of 953 (317-323-313), led by junior Emma Thorngren’s 229 (76-77-76) that placed her 20th individually. The Tritons then began play at the Babs Steffens Invitational on Sunday with rounds of 308 and 321 in another DI heavy field. UMSL entered today’s final 18 holes in seventh place with a score of 629. Thorngren sat in a tie for eighth place individually with a 151 (73-78).
